PS3 making clicking noises/freezing when reading games..

Everytime I insert a game to play, the PS3 automatically makes this weird clicking noise. This normally leads to the game freezing before I even get to the start menu, therefore reseting the PS3 by touching the power button is the only choice (or the game automatically resets when I choose to quit the game). After around 5 resets the game finally works properly and I can play. It tends to only happen with newer released games (Assassins Creed Revelations, Battlefield 3, Arkham City). This is the only problem I'm experiencing. I'm using a PS3 Slim and it's around 2 years old.

What could be the problem?

Re: PS3 making clicking noises/freezing when reading games..

Hey there,

It sounds like there may be a problem with the disc drive.

Test a few of the discs you're having a problem with on another console if possible - to rule out possible problems with the discs themselves.

I'd then suggest backing up any saved data and personal media - last thing you can try is then going to Settings -> System Settings -> Restore PS3 System -> Full Restore.

This will format your PS3 system, and you'll lose any data that's not been backed up.

If your problems still occur, then it will definitely be a hardware issue.

If that's the case, we'd recommend contacting your local PlayStation Support Centre.
