I have recently bought a new PS3 and when I tried to play DVD movies the PS3 would just freeze with a black screen - no error messages. BD movies, PS3 games and CD's all worked fine except for DVD's.

So I called Sony and they said to take it back to Big W, where I bought it.

So today, I got my new PS3 (no it was not the same one) and the same thing happened. However this time I tried some other discs, and I found that only DVD's without region restrictions work.

• Both of these PS3's where bought in Australia and refuse to play region 4 DVD's.
• DVD's used where either brand new or scratch-less
• One DVD says it is PAL with no region stated, but still doesn't work
• Blu Ray with 'B' region coding worked fine

I don't know what to do, because it seems like a software issue. It seems as if Sony has released a batch of PS3's with the wrong DVD region code or unable to play DVD's with any form of region coding.

Any suggestions what I should do?

Hi,

I have seemed to fix the problem - I don't know how but it seems to work.

I moved my PS3 to my CRT TV using component cables and for whatever reason it worked. Then I moved it to the TV through HDMI and it seems to work all good.

I don't know what the problem was, maybe there was a particular setting that was changed when I ran it through the component cables...

That is interesting. But where did you find a CRT TV with HDMI inputs? Is it HD?

I read that as using a different TV, one with HDMI input.

Good to know it's resolved though. It's always best to try Restore Default Settings at the least. (Which will do exactly the same thing)
