PSNewhere (Mobile Phone PSN widget)

Hey All,

I've knocked up an app for certain mobiles (atm just Nokia touch screen devices) that lets you check your friends online status, and see what they're playing on the PSN, it's pretty basic, but has come in handy for myself, so am sharing, as you do :smileyhappy:

PSNewhere

(just right click and 'save link as')

The app is a widget, and as such, to install it, just send it to your phone via bluetooth, or if you have pc suite installed, can just double click it in windows and it will install on the phone.

It's only been tested on my Nokia n97 (tho a mates e71 DOESNT work), but i guess it would probably run on any phone with s60 v5 (ie, most touchscreen nokias, the samsung omnia hd and the SE satio).  It MAY work on the n95, testing and feedback would be appreciated.

When you first run the app, it will prompt for user/password.  Once you enter those and hit 'connect', it will do just that, and after it's done all the connection stuff, it will show your friends list.

If you receive a certificate warning, check that the site it's trying to access is playstation.com, and then accept it (if you choose 'always', you wont be prompted each time).  It looks like the root trust provider that secure.playstation.com uses isn't in the n97 cert chain, but maybe the other devices don't have this issue.

The app will use about 20-30 kb on connection, then probably another 5-10 kb every 5 minutes when it does the status update, so if you do not have a data plan, be aware of this (or use wifi :smileyhappy: ).

This is very much a work in progress.  Let me know if it works, if it doesn't, etc.  I have some other features in the pipeline, but just want to get some feedback on the core app itself.

Cheers

Re: PSNewhere (Mobile Phone PSN widget)

Any idea whether you could get your hands on the source code?

Or know of a web page which achieves the samething?

Perhaps even messaging?

Re: PSNewhere (Mobile Phone PSN widget)

Hey Lythinari,

I certainly can get my hands on the source code, I did write it after all.. :smileytongue:  I'm gonna put it up on sourceforge, have created a project, just want to tidy the source a bit before release.

Regarding web page, it works by scanning the official PSN pages, where you can also check the same details.

Messaging.. This isn't supported because there's no current way of pc -> ps3 comms.  I'm looking at adding associations with your phones address book in future, so you can just select a psn user and say 'call' or 'sms', which is kinda halfway there, but yes, it would be much cooler to just message their ps3 direct.  hopefully sony will really 'open' their psn in future, but for now, it's not so open.

Cheers

Heh, yeah, i guess it does look a bit sus.  I really should have put in some screen caps..so here they are :smileyhappy:

These were grabbed from the dev emulator (well, preview utility, but meh).  Right click and view image to get a bigger view.

There's also a source forge project now, source code isn't there yet, but am working on it!

If anyone wants to donate some help in the form of a logo or other artwork for the project, would be great as editing images is not my forte, full credit will be given.   :smileytongue:

Any phone in particular? Currently it should work on the Sony Ericsson Satio, and the upcoming Vivas, but I do not own a Satio, so can't really test it.
