I have recently purchased a new "slim" Ps3 due to my original "phat" Ps3 died, it is now only 4 months old. Anyway, since I brought it, I have been having trouble with it locking up when I insert a disk, no matter what disk I insert, Blu-Ray, DVD or Game disk. When I insert the disk, the Ps3 detects it, auto-runs and the XMB fades out to a blank screen, that's where it locks up. Holding the PS button does nothing, holding the power button does nothing, I have to remove the power cable, reinsert and turn the Ps3 back on again. After going through the rebuilding and checking data because the Ps3 wasn't shutdown correctly, I try again, usually it now works and I can watch the movie or play the game I tried without problems. I have to go through this everytime I try to watch a movie or play a game, it is trying my patience, my Ps2 and PSX still work to this day, more then I can say for the Ps3.

Obviously that is not normal. Have you called Sony Support?

Hey GlenGrainger,
It sounds like you might need to adjust your video output settings.
Does the screen come back if you eject the disc when it goes blank?
The power button should work, you just need to hold it down until it turns off. This is always the best way to turn it off, without using the controller, if possible.
To resolve your original issue, we'd suggest going through:
Settings -> Display Settings -> Video Output Settings (I'm imagining you're using HDMI) -> HDMI.
Choose 'Manual' - deselect 1080i, 1080p, 720p (you'll be left with 576p) - then test a game or two, if they work, you'd be able to then go back to Video Output Settings and go through Automatic.
This should resolve your issue.
Else, give us a call at your local Support Centre.

Hi,
No, I can't eject the disk once the Ps3 has locked up.
The power button or the PS button does not work, I have held them down for 60 seconds, which is long enough for something to happen, but nothing does, the Ps3 has locked completely.
Display settings are: Output: 1080p (HDMI), Cross Color Reduction: Off, RGB Full Range (HDMI): Full, Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super White (HDMI: Off, Deep Color Output (HDMI): Auto. Ths is the way it has always been set, even for the previous 'phat' Ps3.

Thanks for getting back to me on those queries.
To check whether the issue is related to video output settings, we'd need to reduce the video output. Following the instructions above, can you please advise on your results?
If there is still no resolution, we would then suggest to call your local Support Centre to discuss further.

press & hold the eject button for 20-30 seconds, as a last resort... the bdr might need a reset... though i'd take the mods advice & call them first!

Hey again,
Also - if you turn off:
System Settings -> Disc Auto-Start
- this will tell you whether it's the disc mechanism or an issue only when you start the disc. ![]()

Hi, I changed the RGB Full Range (HDMI) setting from Full to Limited, big mistake, it was worse, but when I changed it back it seems to be running fine now, I have not had a lockup all day, been playing Saints Row 3 on Hardcore.
Had to stop to take brothers car for service, then stop for lunch, stop again to go pick up brothers car, stop for dinner, each of these times of course I had to restart the game, for testing I took out the disk and reinserted each time. No lockups.
Will see how it goes tomorrow, before I make the phone call to Support, something must have upset something.
