So back in december 2007 i bought a new sony tv and received a PS3 40gb console by redemption. Although sony didnt realise how many people would redeem and ran out of PS3's, or so i was told. I took 5 months before i finally saw the PS3. Anyway, the thing YLOD last week and i decided to have a go at fixing it myself, doing it right now, just waiting for it to cool off. I was watching a guide on youtube and the thing looked completly different to the one he was doing, turns out that was a 60GB, so i opened the 40GB video, but it was still different. Opened the 80GB video and there it was. So it turns out Sony just grabbed a bunch of 80GB consoles and whacked 40GB HD's in em to give away. Nothing major (i dont think) but thought id post it up and see if this has happened before.

Just to let you know, the 80GB and 40GB PS3s are exactly the same except for the HDD size. The reason the 60GB inside looks slightly different is because it is completely different to any other PS3. 60GB have backwards compatibility to allow playing PS2 games, they also have 4 USB ports instead of 2.

Long story short, you didn't receive the wrong console with a different HDD, they are exactly the same except for the HDD size. I hope this helps

but you can clearly see the difference between the two? for starters the heat sink clamps on the 80GB can both be seen with only the blue ray drive removed, but with the 40GB you can only see one untill the power source is also removed. Also the 40GB looks to have a metal power box while the 80GB has plastic

Also on the 40gig the hard drive comes out by sliding towards the front of the unit and then sliding out and the drive is oriented towards the front. On the 80gig the hard drive slides striaght out and is oriented towards the side.
