Obviously the bacon companion started off as a joke but some of the best ideas start of that way so it's all good! Nothing wrong with having a bit of fun with these kinda things as long as it's not interfering with the standards that have been set.
At the end of the day, people will either love it or hate it but that applies to everything. Not everyone wants a baby hippo or a skeleton in a gangster hat as a companion either but some people do.
As for names the competition to name it would also be a fun idea. Again engaging the community in a good way which certainly adds to the fun factor of it.
