Freezers got me good

Yesterday I log onto home and going through my checklist of spaces that I visit regularly to collect XP, prizes, etc… and I’m experiencing freezing more than usual.  Froze three times on three different spaces and the third time, my system would not power off via the button, so I had to pull the power cord.

When it came back up, I was greeted by the corrupt HDD message forcing me to run a repair.  Ran the repair, which reboots the system, but the corrupt HDD message came back up.  I was stuck in this loop and could not log onto my PS3.

Checked these forums and found how to boot into Safe Mode and ran all the recommended repairs, but unfortunately for me, the only one the worked was the last one that restores the system back to factory defaults after formatting the HD.  I never took the time to back up my system, so needless to say, I lost everything.  Almost three years’ worth of data.  You don’t realize how much is saved to your HDD until you log back in and the system does not even know what time it is.

Some of you may say that it’s my fault for not backing up and you would be correct.  But I just wanted to tell my story so that you could learn from my mistake.  These freezing problems are not just a nuisance and do take a toll on the hardware.  Do yourselves a favor and back up you data before logging back into home one more time, because you never know which freeze will be your last.

Re: Freezers got me good

Yeah my console is so bust ever since the freezers.

Occasionally my console won't start up properly and it gets stuck loading, and the only way to turn off the console is to pull out the plug/turn the plug off. It doesn't turn off by the button on the console.

I got frozen the other day after noticing one of the "Anonymous" ID's about, I messaged my friend saying they were in this space, was just about to ask if we can change spaces, but I couldn't because we got frozen! No doubt it was that person as they're well known for it.

Re: Freezers got me good

Sorry to hear about that ava. I have had a few freezes in the past week that resulted in a system file repair and restore rather than cache? Hope this is not symptomatic of more serious stuff.

Can you back up to memory stick? If so how is this done?

Thanks for the kick up the butt and again sorry to hear of your bad luck. :smileysad:

Re: Freezers got me good

For those that may not be aware, many customizations on Home are saved to your local HDD and not on Sony’s servers.  Things like favorites, furniture layouts for all your spaces, even what items you have moved to storage are all stored locally.  In addition to your customizations to your avatar, clothing save slots, and even certain spaces save data to your local system.  I’ve not had time to go back to space like Aurora or Novis Prime since the crash, so I don’t know if I have lost my levels.  We spend countless hours configuring all these things and may take for granted where they are stored.

I have learned a hard lesson and plan on backing up regularly from now on.  For those that may know, can you back up specific items, or is it a all or nothing deal?  Meaning, if I spend an hour customizing a space, can I then back up that space, or do I have to do a full system backup?

Re: Freezers got me good

Awww MAN! I'm so honestly sorry to hear this Avatar, I've been lucky to save what I did from a recent PS3 swap but I stupidly signed into Sony on that HDD, now I've swapped it for a TB HDD, I've locked myself out my own account by activating too many at the same time! I'm sure I won't have any problems sorting this out over the phone but I can't re-download all my stuff off PSN until I do. Anyway, I'm posting to say sorry for your loss, oh and that you can save each personal spaces lay out easy. Each spaces instance is saved to your HDD every time you move something in it via Decorate. You can directly find that spaces file in the Saved Data file in Game of the XMB. Every space can be saved to a USB stick, so you can fart about with your furniture and if you want a quick fix, replace it back the way you had it by reloading it into the PS3.

Hey KrazyFace, thanks for the tip.  I really feel silly now for not backing up.  I thought it was this big production that you had to do over night.  Had no idea it was so easy.  Going to pick up some USB drives on the way home from work today.  Hope you get your PSN account mix up straightened out soon..  Have a great weekend!!

Sorry to hear this.
Getting alot of freezes lately too and not just in spaces, when in wardrobe seems to be happening more often.

A little off topic but, my Loco space has messed up with the decorating - won't let me decorate, or do anything at all when I try to decorate there, I have to go to my default space. I have back up's of all spaces from before this problem started, so Krazy do you think if I overwrite the Loco space it will fix it?

Re: Freezers got me good

I've never had this problem myself Pink but I'd say it's well worth a shot. Bit of a late reply I know, you've probably already tried it so lemme know what happens. This would be useful information.

Re: Freezers got me good

Am I the only one that thinks of the bastardized version of Mr. Freeze from Batman & Robin every time someone talks about those nasty freezer kids on Home?
