Is Kudos necessary: No
Does its existence have a detrimental effect? I'm not sure.
It may have minor positive effects by encouraging the occasional well-thought-out post.
It certainly has some minor negative effects by encouraging some people to make overly verbose or pretentious posts.
The Mods say they find it useful as it helps them to identify popular posts. I would have thought the post count would have been equally useful.
My biggest gripe about Kudos though is its permanence. IF kudos remains, I would like to see the kudos count reset monthly (or each individual kudo expire after a month). The problem with the current situation is it highlights individuals, not posts. And it becomes a self-fulfilling viscious/virutous circle with those highly kudoed individuals getting perhaps more attention (and hence more kudos) than is merited.
I got gazillions of kudos for one posts over six months ago. That put me at the top of the leaderboard by an embarassingly high margin. This has a detrimental effect in that some people think I'm a kudos wh ore and deliberately go out of my way to earn kudos. I've even thought of starting a new account to rid myself of this unwanted "honour".
So if the Mods read this, if you must have Kudos, please reset it monthly.

They do reset it in a sense. It resets the leaderboard every day, week, month, 6 months and yearly. But it doesn't remove the kudos applied to a persons account, that is permanent.

Perhaps they can just disable the 6 month, yearly and all-time tabs.

Ive always thought the Kudos system should never have been added this EU fourm.
Personaly It has caused more trouble than its worth, all its done is get spammers, trolls and ex banned memebers to come back under false ID's or get there "mates" to Kudos all there posts for what? It gets your nothing just like post count. Its not about quantity of your posts its about quality.
Post count and Kudos WILL NOT get your respect within this forum, if anything its knocks you down and are more likley to be less respected because of it.
If all you are concered about is post count and kudos, go over to the US boards and leave the EU ones to people who just want to help out the community and make it a better place.
Oh and too anyone who posts US news over here for kudos, please get into your head that its US news has no relevence over here as its SCEA and NOT SCEE related.
