Making a House a Home - A Guide to Personal Spaces

[ Edited ]

Hey Community!

The next part of our OPC Guide to PlayStation Home is a discussion about your own little piece of Home - personal spaces. We want your interior design hints, tips and disasters!

Your feedback in this discussion should cover several subjects:

1. How to place furniture in your personal space

2. The restrictions on what you can put in your personal space

3. Interior design do's and don'ts (With examples!)

4. The best ways of using your personal space

So, whether your approach is minimalistic order or much more "pile a shed load of chairs in the corner and lol" - give us your advice on how to make a personal space a Home.

Over to you!

I'm gutted that we're limited to 2 active pieces of furnture. I want to listen to the boombox whilst playing poker and having mates play pool. This is really important in a Clubhouse.

Oh and if only you'd let us float stuff.

Let's keep this on topic - remember, we're making a guide to PlayStation Home so you'll need to give advice on any of the topics in the OP to contribute :smileyhappy:

Re: Making a House a Home - A Guide to Personal Spaces

If you have a specific theme in mind when you first start to place your items in your personal spaces that can help a lot. It gives you a focus, and makes you think about what you are putting in the space rather than just dumping stuff that you have won/unlocked willy-nilly and hoping that something works. Some spaces provide you with a theme all of their own like the Japanese Apartment but others you may have to improvise. My Audi apartment became my Gaming themed Recreation Room.

Large spaces can be quite hard to fill and make look right, especially when there are so many small objects in home. Use BIG items, make a centre piece and work around it. It can draw the eye in away from the space around it.

Photobucket

The Neptune Suite is huge and admittedly im having trouble with the look. Back and right from this picture is a horrible corner i just cannot seem to get right so at the moment it looks like this...

Photobucket

Using tables to put objects on has 2 benefits, it raises the eye-line of the room, and prevents the floor from looking cluttered with random rewards. I recently visited someones space where the floor was just a sea of reward items and it did not look good.

In smaller spaces, or smaller nooks and crannies of larger spaces, spacing and placement are important. Dont cram everything together and dont use items that are to big for the area you are designing.

Reading back over the points ive just made, i think its all about creating focal points that your eyes just kind of fall upon and can flow between.

Finally my harbour studio when i first returned to Home after 6-ish months away was a little bare to say the least...

Photobucket

...but after putting in some hours and spending a lil cash i think its a very homely space. (The fire place stayed as my main focus point and everything else was built up around it in small sections).

Hope this can be of some use to somebody :smileyhappy:

In my opinion... Completely filling every gap in a personal space makes it very claustrophobic :smileyindifferent:

Try leaving a slight gap between each section of your space :smileytongue:

Re: Making a House a Home - A Guide to Personal Spaces

1. To place furniture go into your PDA once inside you apartment. If your using the new swivel menu go to settings > personal > decorate > furniture. if not just go to personal > decorate > furniture. and if your in the Studio you have the option of wallpaper aswell.

(personally I think this should be in every apartment not just the Studio)

2.Due to PS3's memomory restrictions you only can have 50 item limit with two active items on top. We have asked for a raise on the limit though.

3. Cluttering apartments looks unsightly , if your like me and get bored easily you might want to redecorate more often. Heres some of my apartments that have just been refurnished :

Studio

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-22-53.jpg

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-23-34.jpg

As you can see I've gone with a modern feel here.

Audi

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-32-24.jpg

I've gone with near enough the same clean and modern layout as the Studio.

Log Cabin

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-29-43.jpg

My Lounge area. Site back relax by the fire or find something to watch on TV. ( TV channels have gone down hill now there's nothing to watch ).

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-30-07.jpg

Out side on the deck is a great way just to sit back enjoy a drink and watch time go by gazing at the sunset.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-30-26.jpg

This is Kitchen / trophy room. Kitchens at the top companied by a 90% sofa so you can do the tedious washing up while talking to your friends.  Down the bottom I've tried to make it as a trophy show case but erm hit the furniture limit lol

As you can see though I have tried to make this apartment as relaxing and cosey as I could.

Summer House

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-37-57.jpg

Lounge area.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-37-31.jpg

TV area ( Lads pad :smileytongue: )

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-38-21.jpg

Out side on the patio. ( That reminds me that cake should be removed it's been outside for months. Any one up for being a guniepig and tasting abit).

With this apartment  I based it on my brothers current apartment.

Lake House

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-25-49.jpg

This area is a favourite spot I go when there's just me or I've only got one friend round.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-26-32.jpg

TV area.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-26-42.jpg

Huge hallway ( duno what to do with it )

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-26-56.jpg

Kitchen. Must admit I don't cook  so I just grab takeaways from IREM.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-27-18.jpg

Out side on the decking. This is where most of the parites happen.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-27-40.jpg

Another TV area this time huge TV. Speakers make the whole house vibrate.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-27-55.jpg

Erm yeah ..... this is men't to be another trophy room but erm guess what ....... I've hit the furniture limit.

So with this apartment I've tried to make it like a weekend retreat kinda place.

Finally by no means last.

Musciality apartment -- or Musicality LOUNGE

Dance floor

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-44-08.jpg

Top floor right. If you feel abit sore from dancing allnight relax up here or just get some words of wisdom from our local wiseman.

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 12-44-28.jpg

Top floor left. Just relax ... or failing that look over the balcony and laugh at avatars that can't dance.

( What ever gets your kicks )

This venue was turned into a weekly music event some months ago but since has been cancelled but still is used for small scale get togethers as well as some where to practice your music skills.

All these apartments have been used either to throw a party or just so chat to my friends in private.

All so every single apartment I own are up for tours which can be found here

You've seen my pads and how they get used.

( felt like I was doing Cribs )

Life is like a rollercoaster ... you've just got to choose the right one :smileyhappy:

A tip for decorating  I'd like to mention by using 'snap to spawpoint' that came in a recent update is place an item of furniture on top of another like so:PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 10-53-17.jpg

Then choose the piece of furniture you want to remove, here the audi sofa...  Then press X, Move... Snap to spawn point, then use the D-pad to move the 'audi sofa away, then press X to finish.

  PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 10-54-13.jpgPlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 10-54-38.jpg

You'll then find the other piece of furniture, 'dolphy', has remained 'floated'!!!

PlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 10-55-22.jpgPlayStation®Home Picture 18-3-2011 11-02-50.jpg

It works on all items too!  Created this balcony in Jess's Apartment the same way!
