If you Pre order in store they don't have to give you the goods if there are none. you must not have been around for PS2 release day 1 then, as lots of so called Pre orders were cancelled due to lack of hardware. The store I ordered from had Pre orders of 30 PS2s only 5 were shipped to that store number 3 I was. some currys store got NONE.
They can only ship what arrives but Amazon supply more than 1 web site, they have a few contracts to supply sister sites as well.
In those sort of situations then yes there is nothing that a "bricks and mortar" shop can do other than give you your purchase when one is delivered.
However 99% of the time a "bricks and mortar" shop will buy enough supply to cover pre-orders and for general sale.
The main problem I have with internet sites is that there are so many "links" in the chain between the shop getting its supplies to you getting it in your hands, for example the shop may not get enough to cover supply (seems to usually happen with sites that are the cheapest) then there could be problem with orders going through, then you could have problems with post (post men sometimes go on strike) and after all that there could still be a fault with your order, in which case you have to email/call the company organise a delivery back to them.
I'de much rather pay a few quid more and cut most (if not all) of that hassle out and just get it from my local GAME shop.

You make it sound so laborious when infact stuff can come early and usually only takes 1-2 days

I think the important word their is USUALLY, I've been reading through allot of posts on these forums lately and there are allot of people who have their nunchuck controller but they dont have their move controller.
Your right that it isnt much hassle to order stuff off the internet, heck I order a fair bit of it myself, its just that when things go wrong when you order off the internet they really do go wrong in a big way. With buying stuff from a "bricks and mortar" store it isnt that much hassle to just take it back and get a replacement or a refund.
