Move FAQ

[ Edited ]

Hi guys,

Seeing as there's a lot of question buzzing around the the place at the moment, a lot of which have already been answered already I thought it might be wise to have a FAQ. If there's something I've missed please feel free to contribute, the same goes for if you have a question you'd like answering.

This guide is split into X sections. They are:

PlayStation Move Release Information

- Questions relating to what will be available on release, and how much it'll be.

PlayStation Move Practical Information

- Questions relating to using PlayStation Move safely and effectively.

PlayStation Move Technical Information

- Questions about how it works and what it can do.

Several people have contributed to this guide and have been creditted below for their input. If you see any of these guys on the forum, kiss them on the cheek and call them a superstar!

OK here we go!

PlayStation Move Release Information

What is it? (Mkwone)

PlayStation's latest motion controller. It looks remarkably similar to the Wii's setup. But by all accounts much, much more accurate.

When is it released? (Mkwone)

17th September 2010 in the UK

15th September 2010 EU

19th Septemerb 2010 NA

21st October 2010 JP

Is the navigation controller an essential part of the experience? (MackemLad)

The Navigation controller is not required for all Move games; it’s an optional peripheral that provides the use of an analog stick and directional buttons for games like Heavy Rain and Killzone 3, where you move a player around the screen. You can also use the left hand side of the DUALSHOCK 3 controller for this purpose but the Navigation controller may be a more comfortable option.  (James Gallagher).

What do I need to get started? (addyjones1234/Mkwone)

Depends what you want, already have and where you are!
Got: Need: Cost (RRP)
Nothing PS3 PlayStation Move Bundle. £284.99 (320GB)

NOTE: The PlayStation Move Navigation Controller RRPs at £24.99/$29.99/€29.99. Though not necessary it is advised. A DUALSHOCK 3 can be used in place.

Who Pays RRP's? (Mkwone)

Mugs that's who.

You'll find them in the shop and online for cheaper. Typically:

Move Controller £30

Nav Controller £20

Starter Pack £45

You'll be able to get them a couple of quid cheaper (Shopto have good prices) and there's the lesser known website that seem to good to be true. Just be careful when ordering online and do some research about the companies.

What about patched games? (Mkwone)

There's a few games that have been released which will revice a Move patch. It's not known if these games will recieve the patch day one or some time later.

  • MAG
  • Flower
  • Resident Evil 5 (Gold edtion) - Original will not support move
  • Heavy Rain
  • EyePet
  • Hustle Kings
  • (More to be added later)

Will we see any AAA games that would be made solely for move? (danboly)

Look out for SOCOM: Special Forces, which has been built with Move in mind from the beginning.  (James Gallagher).

PlayStation Move Practical Information

How Much Space Do I Need? (Mkwone)

Tough one. Sony recomended 2.5M, a recent MAG video says 3ft min. Theres no standard requirement but I'd say 1.5M will be enough for most games. Just make sure you've got room around in case you get a bit too involved in Sports Champions.

Where should I place the camera? (Mikal_Drey)

Either on top OR below the TV is fine. You should make sure that there is no light shining directly into the lens (eg - don't point a lamp at it) and that it's nice and secure, you don't want it wobbling in the middle of a fight and end up punching your own character in the face.

A rule of thumb when deciding between above or below is choose the one closest to shoulder height.  (James Gallagher).

How far away should I stand? (Mikal_Drey)

Players can use the Move anywhere from 3 to 10 feet away from the PlayStation Eye camera.

At 10 feet the Eye can capture footage 12 feet across, and has a field of view of 75 degrees.

What else can I do to make sure I'm safe whilst playing with Move? (Mkwone/MusterBuster)

ALWAYS WEAR THE SAFETY STRAP. Seriously.

How do I control the XMB using a Move controller? (MusterBuster)

To use the XMB with Move - first ensure the controller is assigned to your PlayStation 3 console. It does not matter which port it is assigned to.

Once assigned, just hold down the trigger button and move the Move controller in the desired direction. This is also known as 'gesture control'. Release the trigger to stop controlling the XMB.

You can use the Move button to select a menu item, or press O to return to the previous menu or cancel.

You do not need to have the PlayStation Eye plugged in to use gesture control on the XMB.

PlayStation Move Technical Information

How does it work? (addyjones1234)

The PlayStation Eye tracks the lighted 'orb' on the top of the controller to find out where the Move controller is in 3D space (ie; your room). The Move's internal motion and magnetic sensors then calculate what angle you're holding it at and where the controller is in relation to North, as well as tracking information about movement. This enables your console to tell exactly where you are pointing your Move, what angle you're pointing it at, how far away you are, how fast you're moving it and more. The best bit, it's all VERY precise; sub-millimetre!

Does it require batteries? (addyjones1234)

No! Both the Move and Navigation controllers feature a built-in rechargeable battery much like the DUALSHOCK 3 or Sixaxis. The battery life should be about the same too.

You can charge your move using the Mini-USB cable you got with your PS3. These are very cheap to buy should you want more. You can also buy the Official PlayStation Move Charging Dock (Available at Shopto.net for £22.85) which looks like this:

(Note - any combination of Move controllers can be placed in the Charging Dock. -MB)

How long do the controllers last on a full charge (approximately)? (VictorAnalogy)

You’ll get approximately 10 hours of battery life from a full charge.  (James Gallagher).

Can they be used while charging (like dual shock controllers)? (VictorAnalogy)

I just tried using one while it was charging and it does work, but it hinders your movement a bit.  (James Gallagher).

Can I use my Eyetoy camera? (Mkwone)

No, the eyetoy camera is for the PlayStation 2, and whilst the PS3 will recognise the hardware it won't support Move. you will need to get the new PlayStation Eye Camera.

Can I use my Existing PlayStation Eye Camera? (Mkwone)

Yep, the camera the came with Eye of Judgement and Eyepet is exactly the same one being sold in the Move Bundle, you're already one step closer to getting the Move experience. It looks like this:

Do I need two Move controllers? (Mkwone)

No. You may have seen games being played with two move controllers (The Fight: Lights Out & Sports Champions) but all games announced thus far can be played with just the one controller. For Sports champions the buttons on the move replace the second controller and for Fight: Lights Out a DUALSHOCK 3 inbuilt motion controlls can be used as a basic replacement. Of course that's not to say having two moves won't offer a better experience but for those on a budget (isn't everyone?) you can save some money by just using your existing contoller.

Do I need the Nav Controller? (Mkwone)

Nope, your existing DUALSHOCK 3 can be used instead held in one hand using the left side of the controller (D-pad, L1,L2 & L3). Although the Nav controller may be easier to hold than trying to ballance a normal controller in a hand.

How Many Controllers would you Recomend? (Mkwone)

If i was buying and had the money I'd get 2 Move controllers and a nav controller, you'll be able to play multiplayer games as well as have the prefered setup for games like Sports Champions & Fight Lights Out. I'd advise on the Nav controller as I can see holding a dualshock will get tiresome quickly.

Do the PlayStation Move controllers rumble? (Mikal_Drey)

The PlayStation Move controller does rumble, this can be turned on and off in the same way as a DUALSHOCK 3. However, the Navigation controller does not rumble.

Why does the Move controller work sometimes when the light is not on? (Mika_Drey/MusterBuster)

Whilst your Move controller uses the light sphere to track your movements, it's also equipped with magnetic sensors and motion sensors which are inside the controller. So, if your console does not need the extra accuracy that the light sphere offers (EG. When navigating a menu or controlling the XMB) it will not bother to light up.

Will it break easily? (Mikal_Drey)

No. The controller itself is robust and the light sphere is made of squishy rubber. That said, don't point it teasingly at your dog and always wear the strap.

How many Move controllers can be assigned to the PS3? (Mikal_Drey)

Four.

What is the point of the 'Calibrate Motion Controller' in the main ps3 settings when games all seem to require their own calibration? (Mikal_Drey/MusterBuster)

What does the Magnetic Sensor do? (Mikal_Drey)

In short, the Calibration options on the XMB calibrate the Magnetic Sensor within the Move controller. The in-game calibration calibrates everything else.

The long answer is that the Magnetic Sensor is used to give your console information about where your controller is pointing in relation to North. So, if you're having issues with the controller not behaving as expected in general, you should recalibrate or even switch off the magntic sensor.

If your controller is only misbehaving in a specific game, then you should use the calibration options in that game to sort it out.

Can you use Move on the PS3 internet browser, and if so is it anygood? (KAP)

I’ve just tried it and it worked fine, as did navigating the XMB using Move. (James Gallagher).

Will the XMB be updated or given a new look for Move? (Chaosprower)

The XMB remains the same but you could always take a look at the PlayStation Move Dynamic Theme if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber. (James Gallagher).

Having a game that is not officially compatible with Playstation Move, what happens when you use it with that game? (EnGhedi)

Not a lot!  (James Gallagher).

Is there anyway to turn of the voice chat function when playing online move games, since the eye toy can also be used as a mic (Agamer2006)

In the XMB menu Voice Chat is controlled separately to the camera. To disable the Eye microphone you simply change the Voice setting to a wireless headset (which you can turn on/off independently) or to Off.

However if you want to use the Eye as your microphone then there is no way to mute it if the microphone setting is set to the Eye Camera and the Eye is plugged into your PS3.

Last time I checked you couldn’t change this while in game – but since then I know Sony enabled you to access some menus from the in-game XMB. If you can access this particular menu in-game then you’d be able to enable/disable the microphone from there.  (Apnomis).

What’s the delay between the motion controller and the action reflecting on the screen? Is it instant or will you see some significant delay? (iFlec)

The PlayStation Move has similar sensing latency as the DUALSHOCK 3 controller for many PlayStation Move games, this is about 22ms, though it can vary somewhat between games. Modern HDTVs unfortunately have much more latency, usually on the order of 60-160ms. If your TV has “game mode,” make sure to enable it.  (James Gallagher).

You say you can use the sixaxis or DS3 as a nav controler but what about the O and X buttons on it. Do they not get used alot?

Games

Here's the games! There's quite a lot of them including a fair few images. Those without images will be updated in the next few days. Click the image to view a slideshow of images and screenshots from the selected game.

Launch Games:

  Kung Fu Rider

In Kung Fu Rider you control an arrangement of vehicles such as chairs and trolleys. It all sounds a bit wierd but is extremely fun! You'll have to trust me on that one... Start The Party

Start the Party is a collection of mini-games utilizing the Move controller. The game is similar to EyeToy on the PS2 and seems to be aimed towards families!

Sports Champions

Sports Champions is a collaboration of 6 games; Disc Golf, Archery, Volleyball, Table Tennis, ***** and Gladiator Duels! This seems to be Move's 'main' launch title being bundled with the controller and camera in America. Definitely worth picking up!

EyePet - Move Edition

Your favourite EyePet that we all know and love, but this time the magic card is swapped for the Move controller! The original game will also get a patch! This is said to fix the issues we all had with the original in that the card wasn't recognised in some environments. Expect some move exclusive items too.

Patched games:

Hustle Kings

Resident Evil 5: Gold edition

Planet Minigolf

Toy Story 3

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Heavy Rain (also a blu-ray)

EyePet (also a blu-ray)

Flower

High Velocity Bowling

Little World Series 2010

Upcoming games:

  Echochrome ii

Echochrome ii is the sequel to the hit PSN title, the Playstation move controller is used as a torch which casts a shadow for the shadow man to walk on.

The Fight

The Fight - the PS3's boxing game, need I say more? Well, I will. It's a backstreet brawler rather than the Fight Night you all know and love. Expect low blows and cheap shots galore. The Shoot

The shoot does exactly what it says on the tin. It's an on-rails shooter in which you have to take out enemies in a range of different environments! Tumble

Tumble is a stack em up! Place blocks to build towers. Complex jenga?

TV Superstars

TV Superstars puts you in a TV gameshow. Put your face in the game (quite literally - Take a pic with the PS eye and map it to your character) and participate in the kind of tasks you'd find on ITV 1 at 6pm on a Saturday night. (We can say that right?)

Heroes On The Move

John Daly's Prostroke Golf

Grand Slam Tennis

NBA 2K11

Raquet Sports

The Sly Collection

Sorcery

The Lord Of The Rings: Aragorn's Quest

Time Crisis: Razing Storm

Tron: Evolution

Killzone 3

LittleBigPlanet 2

Socom: Special Forces

SingStar Dance

Michael Jackson: The Experience

R.U.S.E

Ape Escape Fury!

Dead Space Extraction (Free with Dead Space 2 on PS3)

Deadliest Catch: Sea Of Chaos

Under Seige

Zumba Fitness

Accessories:

Sony Move Dock £24.99

Sony Gun attachment £19.99

Nyko Move Chargers 2/4 ports £14.99/24.99

FAQ

So you've got some questions! Fire away:

What is Playstation Move?

Playstation Move is a motion controller - not too dissimilar from a Wiimote. You use it to play games.  Shoot at bad guys, waggle to run and everything in between!

Sounds good, when's it out?

Where are you? UK - Friday 17th September Europe and Asia - Wednesday 15th September North America - Sunday 19th September Japan - Thursday 21st October

What do I need and how much?

Depends what you want, already have and where you are!
Got:Need:Cost
NothingPS3 Playstation Move Bundle.£284.99 (320gb) $399.99 N/A
PS3Playstation Move starter Bundle.£49.99(£42.85) $99.99 (includes sports champions) €59.99
PS3, Playstation EyePlaystation Move controller only.£34.99 $49.99 €39.99
NOTE: The Playstation Move Navigation Controller retails for £24.99/$29.99/€29.99. Though it is not necessary it is advised. A dualshock 3 can be used in place.

Which games support Move and how will I know if they do?

Check our Playstation Move games section. There are 3 different 'types' of Move games: Move required - You will NEED Move to play these. For example; Sports Champions. Move supported - A game that supports Move but is also fully playable with a normal controller. For example; MAG, Socom: Special Forces or Killzone 3. Look for this banner: Move content - A game has Move levels or mini-games but doesn't fully support Move. For example; LittleBigPlanet 2.

What else can I do with it?

The Playstation Move controller has basic functionality in the XMB and internet browser. Sony has also shown a number of tech demos that could potentially become part of the PS3's firmware.

How many can play at once?

Up to 4. That's any combination of Moves and Navigation controllers or Dualshock 3s. So 2 Move and 2 Navs or 4 Moves etc.

How does it work?

The Playstation Eye camera tracks the lighted 'orb' on the top of the controller to find out where it is in 3D space (ie; your room) the Move's internal sensors then calculate at what angle you're holding it at! This enables the game to tell where you're pointing, how you're holding the controller, how far away you are and more. The best bit, it's all VERY precise; sub-millimetre!

Does it require batteries?

No! Both the Move and Navigation controllers feature a built-in rechargeable battery much like the Dualshock 3 or Sixaxis. They are rechargeable using the Mini-USB cable you got with your PS3 though these are very cheap to buy should you want more. You can also buy the Sony Move charging dock. (Available at Shopto.net for £22.85)

Controllers

Controller options - So What do you need? Well most games only require one Move controller to play but some require a 'Navigation Controller' (The left hand side of the Dualshock 3 can also be used) or even 2 Move controllers! Here's the options for you! Click the image to view a slideshow of images of the selected product.

  Playstation Move Bundle

Playstation move Starter bundle - This bundle includes One Playstation move controller, a Playstation Eye Camera and a demo disc (Though these may appear on the store too!) The RRP is £49.99 though it can be obtained at ShopTo.net for £42.85. The content on the disc is as follows:
  • "Setting up PlayStation Move" - instructional video
  • Sports Champions
  • Start the Party!
  • The Shoot
  • EyePet: Move Edition
  • Tiger Woods PGA TOUR ® 11 (English only)
  • echochrome ii (PSN title)
  • Tumble (PSN title)
  • Beat Sketchers (PSN title)

Playstation Move Standalone

Playstation move - This is just simply the Move controller on it's own! Obviously required if you want to play a game that has Move compatibility. The Move controller features most of the buttons you would find on the right hand side of a Dualshock 3. X, O, square and Triangle are all the as is a brand new 'Move' button and 'Trigger'. The Playstation button is also lower down for access to the XMB. As I've already mentioned the Playstation Eye camera tracks the glowing ball on the end of the controller and can tell it's position in 3D space by finding the size and location of the ball. The controller's internal sensors then tell the system the way the controller is being held (angle, direction etc), pretty nifty eh? The RRP is £34.99 but is £27.85 at ShopTo.net.

Playstation Move Navigation Controller Standalone

Navigation Controller - Again, simply the Navigation Controller, used in an FPS for example to move your character. Though the controller is not necessary (the left hand side of the Dualshock 3 can be used!) it is recommended as it is comfier and lighter. It's also wireless and uses the same charging port (mini-USB) as the DS3 and move controllers! The RRP is £24.99 but is available for £19.85 at ShopTo.net!
