ATTENTION: Tiscali and Pipex users having problems!

Thought I'd start a fresh thread to highlight the latest information I have about the recent problems that us Tiscali and Pipex users have been experiencing.

I have had no luck so far with a response from my emails to Pipex, so I decided to call them instead. The technical support is in Manilla, though having just speant 39 minutes on the phone, I have been assured it was no more than 8p a minute. They could not confirm that there were any restrictions on my account, and didn't know anything about shaping/throttling, which is no surprise...I didn't really get anywhere with them and have requested a callback which could take up to 48 hours!

So, I decided to try customer services to see about requesting my MAC code (to be released from Pipex) - I spoke to a bloke in the UK and relayed the reasons for my request. He immediately confirmed that Tiscali and Pipex are restricting all P2P conections between the hours of 6am to 11pm if you are on their "unlimited" packages, and although he didn't know when it had been implemented, that several customers had already phoned to request their MAC codes...

I'll update if I get any more information.

That sounds about right. I couldn't update 2.53 at all until after 11pm the night before last and even then it was crawling. and I haven't been able to update Resistance 2 yet so I haven't been able to go online with it. Same with Home since the update.

It's a shame that it's gone this way. Pipex used to be a half-decent ISP before the buy out.

Anyone got any recommendations for another ISP? Is Vrigin any good? I'm looking for a cheap but reliable phone and BB package that works well with PSN and XBL. So any suggestions are gratefully received.

i've heard good things bout O2, if u hav a pay n' go mobile with them the BB only costs £7.50 per month if u top up so much a month (no problem for me since i spend roughly a tenner a month on my O2 mobile on a txt 400 bolt on which givs me 1000 minutes to other O2 mobiles and any uk landlines too)... im restricted to Tiscali until my contract is up and fuming bout it, i only found out they restricted DL speeds a couple of months ago, b4 then i was puzzled as to why my connection received ***** speeds after about 5pm...

OP: if u request ur MAC code can u get outta dodge quickly instead of having to wait untill ur contract is up or what?

Hey buddy.

Sorry to hear about the problems you & the others have been having. Just thought I would let you know about Virgin Media as I have been with them since they were NTL. They are generally very good & their speeds are fast (im on the XL package 20mb) but they like others do "traffic shape" if you donwload over a certain limit during the peak period. I have enclosed a link below to their policy on this for your information:

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/traffic-management.php

All in all I have only ever had 2 problems with my connection in 4+ years & they were both sorted in 2 days each. The downside to this, is that their Customer Service Center is based in India but like I have previously stated I have only had to contact them twice. It's difficult not to recommend them, but I think it may depend on your location as some people have problems with them. Im based in Norwich, just for your reference.

If you have any other questions or anybody else for that matter, please feel free to ask?

I've had enough....I've ordered the 16mg O2 package, just have to wait a few days for Pipex to give me my MAC code and i'll be back in the game! The stories i've read so far, every company Tiscali touches turns to ***** - so why are they still in business?!

All Tiscali want is customers who will send e-mails and surf the web, it allows them to get more people on the same bandwidth, making them more money.

In my opinion they like to force customer who want to use the service to the max out, so anyone who games, uses P2P or works from home (all high traffic activites) they are quite happy to loose.

I was with Tiscali years ago and suffered the exact same problem when I got my PS3 (at launch), it was impossiable to even get on PSN back then between 5pm and midnight. While they denied traffic shaping to me when asked, a manual DNS test proved they were switching me to a different server between these hours.

Moved to NTL/Virgin cable straight away, I have a 10meg package with them and they have been great.

Regards

So what i thought was happening was in fact true. I can't believe that they think this a good idea. A large proportion of broadband subscribers use it for gaming 1st, web 2nd. they are idiots imo.

Pipex used to be such a great company as well. i've been with them for 5 years or more and have little to no trouble at all in that time. This is the first mess-up, and imo its because they were taken over by Tiscali who ruin everything they touch.

And having non-uk technical support? What a great idea that is. When I start to talk in techno babble they can't understand a word i'm saying!

Well i'm gonna spend tonight researching new broadband suppilers. o2 looks like the best choice so far though as cable is not avalible in the sticks where I live.

Re: ATTENTION: Tiscali and Pipex users having problems!

That's the thing with these foreign call centres, if your question isn't on the prompt card then they're at a loss.

One of the best things about Pipex pre-Tiscali was it's use of English phone supprt. I guess that's gone too. and another change is first time I was going to leave them a few years back they offered up the MAC Code straight away but I stayed put in the end. Now with Tiscali it suddenly takes 2 days to generate. Load of *****. O2 here I come. Will the last one out please close the door.

Re: ATTENTION: Tiscali and Pipex users having problems!

I just got off the phone myself to Tiscali, complete waste of time, the guy said they are not blocking anything between 5 and 11, Yeah right, also the best bit, no one else has complained with PS3 conecction issues. I got the number to get my MAC code, Off to look for a decent ISP.
