To give a little more detail, DNS queries happen over UDP, however, if the response is larger than 512 bytes the server marks it with a "truncated" flag, which tells the client to repeat the query over TCP so it can get the full answer.
Some services fail to correctly implement the DNS standard and are unable to handle these TCP requests. Sky/Be Internet in the UK appear to both be such services.
While it is undoubtedly the case that these ISPs and their associated router vendors should fix their nonsense, Sony could help us out here by arranging their DNS to only ever return responses under 512bytes (essentially that would mean they would return a few akamai IPs, but not a great list of them).
Quite how I would go about communicating this issue and the workaround to Sony's networking department.... I have no idea ![]()

Good work cmsj!
I changed my DNS to use the openDNS servers a while back but didn't think to do any testing as to why my isp (sky) was dropping the DNS request.
It may be worth sending your findings to one of the Mods on this site as a PM to see if they can raise it with the powers that be. I can imagine it will be a lot easier to get Sony to lower the size of the DNS response than getting each and every ISP to sort their cr#p out.
It seems that Sony must have only recently increased this size anyway as the ISP's have always been a bit sh#te.
Thanks again cmsj, good work.

I installed a local DNS server to trap the requests the PS3 is making and replicated them against the BeBox...

This is what happens on some BeBoxes anytime a DNS query falls into TCP mode (which is an entirely normal part of the DNS spec).
I'd say this indeed is not a problem with the PSN or the PS3, but with crappy ISPs!
Hi - we have been having the same problem also, and I would agree that switching to openDNS serves shouldn't be the long-term solution but I really don't understand what your message means! What do you suggest people do?
Thanks!

My recommendation would be one of the following:
- If you don't want to faff around at all and just want it to work right now, use the OpenDNS guide above.
- If you can be bothered to look up the DNS server IPs for your ISP, use those instead of the OpenDNS ones (the other instructions above should be the same)
- If you fancy learning about some of the thrilling world of DNS, you could install your own "caching nameserver" on another computer on your network (assuming it's on all the time).
I think the second option is probably the best compromise until the wider issues here get solved
