Yes I know I can do it from my PS3, but can I do it online?

The reason I ask. Is my nephew has asked to borrow some money to buy BF3 premium, and at the moment I can't see if Amazon/Play/Game do an email PSN card. So I was going to go into his account add the funds using my card and then delete my card details at the end.

Woundn't that mean him giving you his login details?

I understand you're probaby not the type of person to do anything bad with his account, but it's just not a very good way of dealing with this.

A better way would to go and buy some PSN cards from a shop and then tell/text/email the codes to him.

I'm unsure if PSN checks that the cardholder name matches the registered name of the PSN profile.

I'd say, try it. If it works, then all good - then delete card details, if it doesn't, then you'll be forced to back out anyway, and no card details will be added.

@ Cid yes he has given me his details and no I don't abuse them

Why not login to your own account first and see if it will let you delete your card details.

That way if you add them to his account you'll know how/if you can delete them from his.
