Re: Failed to obtain IP address..

the one called **PSN Connection Problems?** :smileyhappy:
it will take you to this thread ->
http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/Technical-Help/FAQ-Connection-problems-to-PSN/m-p/10411577

the first post in there is the list of questions that will help:
In your case you have already answered some of them (you can't connect to PSN at all), but the rest will he very handy :smileyhappy:

1) any error messages you are getting (typically numeric)
2) when the problem happens (just one game, all games, accessing PSN Store or Home?)
3) if you can actually sign in to PSN at all
4) run the network connection test, and tell us where it fails (or tell us that it works)
5) who your ISP is
6) what make and model your router is
7) how you connect your PS3 to the router
8) if this is something which has never worked, or used to work
9) what DNS servers you use (or tell us if you don't know what that means )
10) if you have changed your MTU (again, don't worry if you don't know what that is )
11) if your PS3 is in the router DMZ (ditto again )

* YLOD? * *PSN Connection Problems?* *Blu Ray Problems

And we weren't even testing for that..

@davey23, I was not going to correct you but your example private IP address is bugging me. Addresses starting with 169 (and followed by 254) are not private. Its an APIPA, an automatically assigned IP address when no DHCP is found. Also, the 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.0.254 (APIPA) range is reserved for Microsoft; thus meaning the PS3 will not get an address in this range, even if it cannot find a DHCP.
I think are more accurate example of private IP addresses are 192.168, 10.10 or 172.16.

Re: Failed to obtain IP address..

I'm not sure if this problem has been solved or not but I'll post what I would do to resolve it.

Firstly find out the follwoing information about your network.(If your are using Windows® open Command Prompt and type IPConfig /all.) I suggest your write this information down.

  • Default Gateway (This is usually your routers address)
  • Subnet Mask
  • DHCP Servers
  • DNS Servers

Also since you are connecting wirelessly ensure you have your SSID and passphrase.

Next look at the DHCP Servers IP Address/s and Default Gateways IP Address. They generally should be the same.

Now go to your PS3 Internet Connection Settings and select custom and then follow the prompts as you normally would until you get to the IP Addressing Settings. Here you select manual.

et up your PS3's network settings using the custom option rather than the easy option. When you get to the "IP Address Settings" select manual. Then on the next screen enter the approprate addresses.

IP Address: The address of the PS3. You can make this address up, however, it MUST be in the same subnet as your network.

Example: If your routers IP Address is 192.168.1.1 and your Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0 then give your PS3 an IP address like this 192.168.1.20.

Subnet Mask: Same as the one you wrote down earlier.

Default Router: Your routers IP address (Default Gateway).

Primary DNS: Your routers IP address should be fine here.

Secondary DNS: Leave the default 0.0.0.0

On the next screen leave MTU as automatic and on the next screen select Do Not Use for Proxy Server (unless you use one which is unlikley)

Once you finnish the set up try signing in again.

Let us know how you go.
