I'm wondering if anyone can give me any pointers on a problem I'm having. 6 months ago I replaced the original 40GB HD with a 32GB no problems at all. I was given a 500GB HD and decided to put that in instead. I followed exactly the same procedure as before, namely used Backup to copy HD to an external FAT32 HD, installed new drive, started PS3, it formatted new HD and then I kicked off the restore programme. It found the backup on the external HD and started restoring. 2 hours later at 100%, got a message saying the HD was corrupt and had to be formatted again. I thought I'd done something wrong, so I let the PS3 do what it needed to do but found I had to restore a second time. However, when this finished at 100% restored I got the same message again. The PS3 then formatted the HD again and I'm back to square one!!
I'm confused because I haven't done anything differently to when I changed the eariler disk and I am at a loss as to why the new disk won't work. Any suggestions greatly apprecaited.

Update:
The error code is 80010029 which apparently is related to protected game content. I have found an apparent work around which I'm going to give a go. Failing that, it's start with a default machine again!!

Same exact thing happening to me with 250gb to 500gb replacement. it restores to 99% then says cannot be restored and tries to recover and fails.
Whats your workaround?

It was a while ago now but I followed this solution I found on the net.
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/
This was the extract I used:
I felt the need to be sure and post this because I had the EXACT same problem and it was extremely frustrating. My restore operation would get to 100% and fail. I wasted DAYS trying to figure this out. Backup... restore... FAIL... Backup... restore... FAIL! But, I finally found a workaround!!! It's not perfect, but it's easier than copying hundreds of files one by one. Here's what I did.
1. Make backup.
2. Install new HDD
3. Begin restore operation.
4. Hit circle to cancel restore at 98% (99% if you're brave enough).
5. Follow on screen instructions to rebuild Database. (SUPER EASY).
6. Reboot and deleat the "corrupted data" in the GAMES menu on the XMB.
This works great! 100% of my data "INCLUDING COPY-PROTECTED DATA" was recovered this way. The last 2% are only part of the Database rebuilding process and all of your stored data will have already been properly restored. The problem with this method is that you have to vigilantly monitor the progress which took me 2 hours. It may say 1hr 28min. but it's gonna take longer I promise. But you must monitor it toward the end, because if you don't and it reaches 100% and fails it will corrupt your backup and you will have to switch back to your original HDD and make a fresh backup (another 2 hr. process). If you try again with a backup that you previously tried to restore it will freeze before it ever reaches 98%. Mine usually froze around 72% and you will lose data.
Basically, do the restore process again but when it gets to 98-99% (depends how long your nerve will hold as this needs to be done before the error message kicks in), cancel the restore I think with the O button. It will says there are corrupted files and ask if you what the PS3 to sort them out. Choose to do this and you will end up with a mostly restored drive, depending upon when you choose to cancel the restore. I think I also had to delete some corrupted save game files but they were games I wasn't too fussed about.
When mine finished , I appeared to be missing any purchased downloaded content and game updates, all of which I was able to download again. If it's downloadable content from the PSN Store there are apparently restrictions on the number of downloads so if you've downloaded them before, you might have problems. It took some time (and a couple of worried moments that I might have lost important (to me) saved game files and throphies) but I was able to most of what I had on the new drive eventually.
The problem as far as I can tell it that although the back up routine copies items you have paid for and downloaded, there are DRM issues when you try to restore them and/ or certain saved game files.
I hope this helps and let me know how things pan out.
Regards
Andrew

Hi, thanks for the info, tried this method yesterday. Started the restore process at 8.30 am yesterday and it had got to 98% by 11.30pm last night. Stoped it there and let the ps3 recover and rebuild its database. It worked great, but I did notice the following issues, all of which we easily corrected.
1. Had 1 corrupt psn game. Just deleted it
2. Had to De-activate the PS3 for games then Activate it again to be able to play any of my games.
3. On loading Home for 1st time, it asked to reserve hard drive space again.
4. Trophies took a few goes to sync and seemed to take much longer than usual, about 3 mins
5. Had to redo my custom folders again as these were not restored.
Thanks again for your help Andrew, it was a long day yesterday, but worth it in the end
I will add other findings as and when I come accross them.

Another note to add:
6. Have had to delete HOME from the xmb and reinstall. It would not fully load up.
Working ok now
