Hello all,

Not been on here in like... ages. Anyway, I'm having a problem with getting my friend's PS3 to connect to the internet.

He's got the Computer connected to a router then connected to a 4-way switch to his PS3. Everytime I test the PS3s internet connection I get the error "the attempt to obtain an ip address timed out".

Do I have this connected in the wrong order or something.

Any help will be appreciated.

EDIT: Just found out that, when the computer isn't connected to the internet the PS3 works and vice versa.

Is this setup with a static IP address by any chance? Sounds to me both the PC and PS3 have the same IP configured.

The router should have the ISP details to connect to the outside (Public IP) and then Assign out a IP to the PC and PS3 (Internal IP) , usually these are in the range of 192.168.x.x

make sure dhcp is turned on on the router

what is the make and model of the router?

on the PC , Start => Run , type cmd and at the prompt "ipconfig /all" without the quotes.

On the PS3 , go into Settings => Network Settings => Settings and Connection Status
