You dont, thats the great thing about it, you still get to play online, and chat online ingame and text message online and do everything you do at present online, it wont detract in any way from the PSN you enjoy now........but some like myself find that getting access to better bargins on the PSN arcade games, X-Chat and a score of games and stuff to play while subscribed is defianlty worth trying at least once for 15 months(3 month free with the first year sub).
