There is a proxy hack that stops your PS3 knowing there is a firmware update, but the firmware version is communicated at login time, so anyone connecting to PSN from today with 3.41 is clearly using a proxy to block the update notifications... I expect these to fall into the blanket PSN ban too.
So you're saying I can't even log on to get the update, because according to you, if I log on when I get home from work. I'm "obviously" using a proxy hack, since my PS3 will still be on 3.41.
You wouldn't be connecting to the PSN though, only the update servers when it realises you are running an older FW.
PS3 does not use PSN for firmware updates, as it's been mentioned, you can only get on PSN with the latest firmware, when you download firmware, it's not via PSN at all.
It uses this URL to check:
http://fau01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3
The file contains the latest firmware, if it's mandatory and the download links. So you never go near PSN with old firmware, and if you do, then they know you are upto no good. I can see how some people in this thread are now panicking... LOL...

Whatever Sony do, they're kinda scuppered. Eventually, someone's gonna hack the OS to bypass the checks that Sony are trying to force on them.
I couldn't give a monkeys about people pirating games - it's the people who will be hacking games that bother me. ![]()

I think what's funny about all this, is the clearly bogus claims that appeared yesterday there was all sorts of dormant code in the firmware for PS2 compatibility, NTFS, MKV and all the other stuff people want.
I think the homebrew scene saw this firmware coming, and figured that claiming all this was in there was a last shot across the bow, as now the firmware is here that locks everything out, they can forever cry about all thee things that Sony are apparently holding back from us, without ever needing to produce the goods (i.e. a dongle that unlocks it all).
Honestly, the homebrew scene must think all gamers are idiots to believe this.. That conveniently everything everyone wants is all in there, and just needs a switch flicking in the firmware...
I waiting for OtherOS style protests from people that believe all their lies and spin.

I think that's what I said, isn't it? It uses the update server to check before you hit the PSN?

This is not going to stop any one who wants to hack there system as they will just not update now and still crack the system any way. I also dont think it will be to long till they work out a way round this like they have with the PSP. Once you are in its much harder to stop it

There probably is dormant code for some of those things.. PS2 compatibility for 60gb PS3s that can handle it, NTSC for American PS3s.. trying to enable that stuff will just cause the PS3 to crash, coz it doesn't have the hardware, or maybe it's incomplete dev code.
Just because it's in the code, it doesn't mean it'll work. It might be interesting if they can get it to work, though.. isn't the hacked PSP OS supposed to be better than the official OS?
