Iplayer STARTED as A streaming content provider only, Downloads Did not exist and still don't for Some systems. The Web page was not thrown together its designed for all NON Monitor use.
The PS3 web content application is being tested by The US firm Netflix. The Application comes on a BD Which Forces WEB streaming of their content with US users acting as Beta users.
After the Application Passes what will be most likely years of public US use, it Will be released as an Installed App for PS3 (Allready confirmed by Netflix). Then other Companies Can likely Buy the App to customize for their Content.
WebTV is not going away. TVs with browsers (Yes they do, stop buying cheap HDTV sets ) Dont have storage HDDs as its not Needed.
DivX in the USA Has been signed Up By LG to supply them with their DivXTV hardware for All New LG TVs. Again More IPTV supplied by Broadband. It hides the WEBTV systems under a shiny new interface.

The browser in PS3 is NetFront and I think we all agree it not up to job.
There is no way of geting Firefox runing on PS3 as system has so little ram. But there is Fennec (Firefox Mobile). It works very well and has a low memory footprint.
If want to see what Fennect can do and do not own Nokia N900/N810 then can download for Windows/Linux/Mac http://www.mozilla.com/en-GB/mobile/platforms/
PS Fennec works with Google Wave, something that Netfront can not touch. Yes Fennec can render HTML5.
