Why has PSN been so unreliable recently?

[ Edited ]

Up until about two months ago I very rarely had any connection difficulties, and never had a problem syncing Trophies at any time of day.  Now I cannot sync Trophies at any time of day, and I frequently cannot sign in to PSN.  What's going on, Sony?  You're making us PS3 owners look bad against the competition!

My latest error was while playing a demo of Gravity Crash - just after completing a level I get a PS3 error 8002A10D, I will look this up in the errors thread but I just know it'll be to do with PSN connection difficulties.

PS - I have run the Network Test and everything succeeded, no problems there at all.  My internet is working fine for everything else, computers, iPlayer on the PS3, I can even get to the PSN Store via the video section (but not via the normal way in).

My PS3 is wired to the router via a 1Gbit unmanaged switch which has worked flawlessly prior to these recent PSN problems, I have no reason to suspect anything other than the PSN servers.

Re: Why has PSN been so unreliable recently?

It's probably firmware 3.10. That seems to sync trophies a lot more often than previous firmwares, eg after quitting a game and going to the trophy section, it will tyr and sync even if you haven't unlocked any. The facebook integration probably adds a bit of traffic as well.

I have also noticed PSN not being as reliable.. I have no problems signing in but sync trophy is a pain! I know PSN is free and all but PSN was much better before it was getting clogged up with home content and things like facebook...

So we're saying that Sony have done an AVG and created much more internet traffic than necessary?  Shooting themselves in the foot somewhat, they should have anticipated the extra traffic and calculated how many extra servers they would require to cope; somebody needs their bonus revoked for this balls-up.

Re: Why has PSN been so unreliable recently?

I only get trophy sync problems which oddly coincided with the launch of MW2. Luckily I've never been signed out and my download speeds have always been maxed out on my 16MB connection. But it is worrying that it appears the service is slowly degrading from reading many forum posts. I wonder if it is anything to do with the recent rise in PS3 sales since the slim and the price drop.

Xmas day will probably bring PSN to it's knees!

Re: Why has PSN been so unreliable recently?

Trophy problem is due to high traffic on the trophy server database , sony are looking to stop this from happening. By adding more capacity and removing the bug.

Nothing to do with MW2 or firmware a increase in sales mean more PS3 owners more traffic. Therefore created a bug which now needs to be corrected by removing it adding more capacity.

There a post on it in the tech support forum

Your PSN issues may be down to your ISP messing around or lack of capacity in PSN.
