hi there i am a convert from the xbox360 and wondered if any one can tell if it is possible to invite a friend for a private chat on the ps 3 like i could on the xbox sorry if it seems a simple question but i only seem able to txt chat or have open chat

At the moment you can't enter a private chat while in a game, also known as party chat on the 360. However you can enter or create a private chat room from the XMB (when not in a game); just above your Friends List there should be an option for Start New Chat, from there select Voice/Video Chat and you will create a private voice chat room. You can invite whoever you want from there.
As far as in-game party chat is concerned the PS3 doesn't have it yet, from what I hear it's already in the works but you'll have to pay a subscription for it upon release. When this will actually happen is anyone's guess.

yes you can but you cant be in a game you have to stay in the chat room so if you wanna tlk to your friends private you can only use the chat
