Administration Threads > R.I.P Threads

37 Replies 321 Views Created 16-01-2013

I think this year we're gonna see a new trend :D lots of high street shop closure threads in GD.

With lots of our fondest memories of window shopping.

So...Blockbuster, Jessops and HMV this last 2 weeks. What's next? Who do you think is next? My money is on Staples. They closed a fair few shops last month due to online sales.

Cmon then GD let's hear your predictions!

BP.

Actually, now that I think of it, the most likely to get screwed this year are probably the Lib Dems.

I also said Waterstones on Twitter. I don't know many people that buy their books in paper form any more. You can even get it on your smartphones, let alone a Kindle or other tablet with eReader.

I still buy books in the original form.

I just prefer to read on paper than staring at a screen. I do that too much as it is. :D

I said this in another recent thread too but I will be distraught if Waterstones goes like predicted, I personally think there is nothing better than picking up a real book and flicking through the pages with that booky smell they have. I also love the covers, and would like some signed - my book case is awesome so i'm not going to stop now ;)

And I would agree with you. Of course we'll still be able to get books online for the time being, but the modern quest to acquire as much as possible for the lowest possible price relegates the process from the joy of browsing around a book shop to initiating a sterile online transaction. There must be a lot of impulse buying from that browsing that is far less likely to happen online.

In any case, barring some kind of miraculous cultural resurgence it seems to me that books will largely disappear over time; yet another victim of the ever-shortening attention span of successive generations, who can barely concentrate for long enough to read 140 characters of utter drivel in a tweet, never mind read and comprehend an entire book.

And I can talk about them as much as I like here because they won't have read this far.

I totally agree, books will eventually diappear sadly. It really annoys me actually, I haven't bought an e-reader out of principle. I think e-readers are very handy for travellers or business professionals that are on the road a lot but I really feel they should not entirely replace books (although it is inevitable).

I did my degree in English literature so I love all manner of texts and novels - I was actually thinking of starting a 'Book Club', but wasn't sure if anyone would recommend/review or even care :'(

I tend to prefer real books too but e-readers have their place. I sometimes read on my iPad in the evening, which works well in subdued lighting. And the Kindle looks nice too, although I don't have one.

I've never seen virtual book clubs work well in forums though, I assume because reading taste is so diverse.

Hmmm maybe just a general book thread will be better then, where people can rate/slate books with a brief synopsis and give others food for thought.

What do you like to read? I always have a book on the go and I have a very diverse taste although I can't resist crime novels. I read all sorts really, some of my favourite authors are Joe Hill, Karin Slaughter, Shakespeare (seriously lol), Tolkien, Nicholas Sparks and Tess Gerritsen as well as a whole host of girly writers of course. I also really like Swedish hubby and wife team Lars Kepler. I think my all time two favourite novels have been Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov and also Memoirs of a Gesiha by Arthur Golden.

I am currently reading a true story about a man and his cat that survived life on the streets called 'A Street Cat Named Bob'. It's very uplifiting :)

Oh and WH Smiths. You can buy what you need from supermarkets now. Stationary/magazines/books etc. - That's about all they sell.

I can see maybe one of the fashion chains going..which company owns Topman/shop/River Island/Burton/Miss Selfridge again? Dont' think they'd fold but can see some of their brand stores merging and some shops closing.

People buy their clothes from charity shops/Primark/Online/Supermarkets these days. 1. convenience, 2. price.

People forget that by buying it cheaper elsewhere, it forces the prices to go up anyway. I don't look around too much price wise these days, and always go to the high street first anyway.

I spend a lot of money on the high street, knowing I could get it cheaper online xD

That was happening all the way up to a few years back, back when we had an overreliance on credit cards and loans. Since they brought in more stringent laws on credit cards, we've seen fewer/no Capital One "what's in your wallet?" ads, and more Kerry Katona payday loans ads.

However, if your incomings are larger than your outgoings, I guess we've no problem here :p
