Flood Preparation 2012

(UK Only) but other EU countries may find some info, useful.

Over the next few months severe flooding may occur near your home and if it does, it is best to get prepared. The UK has endured the driest months on record throughout 2011 & 2012 and due to this the Environmental Flood Agency and the Met-Office are expecting high levels of rainfall to hit the UK which is mainly being brought on by increased low pressure coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The areas which might be affected worse, are the areas without flood defences.

Here's a few simple steps you could take to minimise loss of life and limit the damage to property.

  1. Create a personalised Flood Plan
  2. Call the Environmental Flood Agency for warnings and other advice about flooding 0845 988 1188 or alternatively look at this leaflet for information about protecting your property.
  3. If you have a house near a lake or river... follow this guide
  4. watch & listen to weather forecasts (I know there boring, but they could save your life) or alternatively check the Met-Office website for general weather info & weather warnings. There's also a link on there, where you can check the weather where you live and other corresponding warnings as well; besides flooding.
  5. If flooding is imminent listen to flood sirens and take actions by sealing up doors and windows where water might get into your home.
  6. Make sure you take valuables and pets upstairs, out the way of the flooded area.
  7. Only evacuate your home when it's safe to do so or when ordered by the Emergency services.

Currently on 24/04/2012 at 5:12am: There are  no weather warnings issued.

This is a Flood preparation guide only. The info provided within this post is supplied by the Met-Office and the Environmental Flood Agency and info is correct at the time of posting.

I think between now and this time yesterday I've seen perhaps 20 minutes without rain at most. I love rain so I'm quite enjoying al this. As long as it doesn't interrupt footy on the weekend, I'll be a happy man.

I have this image of you in my head, awake all night refreshing the weather sites, with a pile of sandbags behind you just waiting for your chance to shine.

Yep too right... I'm Captain America, except... erm, British. :smileyvery-happy: Captain British doesn't have the same ring to it in my opinion.

I study Meteorology in my spare time, It's 1 of my hobbies.

I change my statement about floods. We have a few small ones around my local estate. The green/field is flooded, and so is the sides of the road that run along by it.

Same around here.

It's probably all the rain we've been having lately.

i left my bath running too long, could also be the reason. do the flooded areas have warm water with lots of soothing oils in them with overflowing fluffy bubbles?

I'll have Laras come round with his clipboard later to evaluate the situation and produce a comprehensive risk analysis.

Assuming he isn't too busy Googling cloud formations and tracking the Gulf Stream on a wall chart.

Come on Pat, that's a little ridiculous. Obviously he has a team for that.

I believe that the amateur meteorologist typically works alone.

I doubt that many of the professional ones socialise much with other people either.

I thought they hung out in groups. I'm sure there was some team in England who had a machine that could predict the weather a year in advance or something along those lines.

I suppose it's possible that they may meet at those Star Trek conventions and form small groups.

Hmm. I'm beginning to understand what he meant by having meteorology as a 'hobby' now.
