Train vs Tank?

49 Replies 461 Views Created 21-12-2011

i just remembered a james bond film where a train rammed a tank, so i was wondering if a tank rammed a modern passanger train (local train sort of thing) or a heavy duty freight train, who would be in worse condition as a result?

scenario: tank is travelling at 20mph (i believe that is the top speed of a tank generally) vs a train going 30mph

so who would win?

Re: Train vs Tank?

I'd say that it depends.

Re: Train vs Tank?

i feel like im in some sort of math test and havent revised 8o

theyd probably both lose, but Bond shot at the train too, so im guessing a tank is more deadly and a train probably less so.

Re: Train vs Tank?

The train would almost certainly derail and suffer a lot of damage. I image the tank would be in better condition seeing as it is at least designed to withstad impacts to a degree.

Re: Train vs Tank?

Think the train would suffer the most damage but largely due to the fact that it would derail. A train is heavier than a tank but is not designed to withstand that kind of impact.

Re: Train vs Tank?

I think the train would come worse off, tanks are designed to be able to shrug off some big blows. *Waits for Mr_I to come in with some links and facts*

*All my spelling and grammar mistakes are on purpose.

Re: Train vs Tank?

That scene was filmed near where I live, Goldeneye I believe it was,

All the props were down there for a while as they filmed it.

Re: Train vs Tank?

[ Edited ]

Isn't this down to the momentum that both the train and tank are travelling at?

so erm momentum = mass x velocity :smileytongue:

Re: Train vs Tank?

^

Yeah, most likely some sort of scientific equation relating to the mass & velocity like you said.

Re: Train vs Tank?

(mass of train x acceleration of train) - (mass of tank x acceleration of tank)

Velocity is relative to acceleration.

ie. It would depend on the physical mass of the tank and the train, but i think a passenger train would sustain more damage than the tank, whereas a freight train would cause more damage to the tank.
