What's the point in Marriage?

43 Replies 563 Views Created 19-09-2012

Personally it doesn't hold much water with me, to me it''s simply a piece of paper without no solid benefit beyond that. I see no reason two people who love each other can't raise children or continue to be in love just co-habiting that they somehow need a piece of paper to prove it.

I mean legally (correct me if im  wrong) it's not as if you would be refused visitation to a partner in say a hospital for example just because you aren't married. It also gets messy in terms of divorce with also financial implications of the legeal fees and can also be a somewhat drawn out process not to mention a possible negative effect on your children.

To summarise I don't see it as anything but the ability to attach anothers surname and a piece of paper. I see it having very little relevance to my generation (or maybe it's just me) or the future ones to come.

Without marriage, or at least the legal obligations from one partner to another, gold digging wouldn't work and WAG competition would get more intense I imagine...

I suppose, Infinite, that "WAG" would simply become a boring "G". Those poor newspapers will have to think of something else then.

I guess it all depends on each person on the views they hold with it.

To me, marriage is nothing more than showing somebody you love them, they're the person you want to spend the rest of your life with and the person that you are devoted to. You could just tell them that of course, but sometimes it's can be more meaningful to have some sort of celebration or have some sort of symbolism for your actions and feelings.

It is appalling that people are allowed to live in sin. The government should extend the CSA to include a chaperoning service and couples should be allowed to hold hands and have a quick snog now and then but no humpty until they are married, either in a religious service or a civil ceremony. It is all this shacking up together where the roots of societies ills stem from, if marriage was compulsory then there would be no riots, drunkenness, drug consumption, nicking, road rage, graffiti, vandalism, shoplifting, anti social behaviour, truancy, idleness, worklesness, overgrown gardens, furniture dumped in the front garden, cars on the kerbside with no wheels, atheism, communism, consumerism to mention a few.

Indeed, marriage is the loom on which our social fabric is (or rather was) woven.

We didn't used to have those unpleasantries when the bottom of hopes, dreams and aspirations was suitably filled early on with the red hot poker of married life.

Children born out of wedlock should be shipped to Australia or maybe even China to work from the age of three.
This could bring a lot of revenue in for the UK, even at the price of £40 per child would bring in more cash than the tax on smokes.

We either put a tax on kids born to non married parents or sell them off at £40 per pop.
Much better idea than taxing hot pasties.

If we ask this in a political sense, then Marriage is a benefit indicator.

Marrige has lots of points!

- For women, it's a day to "feel special". (Though I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong with every other day).

- For religious people, it's a bunch of crock, masquerading as something important. ("I'm on the phone with a sky-god right now, and he informs me that he's personally watching over this particular marrige, and it won't fail!" *wink-nudge*).

- For insecure couples to gain the illusion of trust, stability and security.

- For legal purposes; it sets up some defaults concerning what goes where when someone dies. (This can be a little bit of a minefield, as a friend of the family recently found out).

- Without people pouring way too much money into their ceremonies, we'd have no "marrige industry", and we need the jobs!

But seriously.. To me, marrige is just a legal construction, which doesn't necessary mean it's a good thing. That friend of the family recently lost his wife, he's about to lose his house and a lot more because her side of the family wants their inheritance. (I honestly was surprised to find out that they are entitled to half of everything, including the house he lives in, their summer-place, his car, etc). For some reason, I would have thought it would all be his, and when he dies, then the inheritance would be split up among both sides of the family. As he said, with slight bitterness, "remember to write a testament".

I don't think you can legally marry household appliances, plus dishwashers are crap in bed.

It wouldn't suprise me if an American has married a toaster, I watched that doumentry once where there were plenty of people getting married to animals in America.
There was an article I read a while back in a mag about some bloke who made love to his motorbike and his wife was fine with it. I can't remember where he was from, could have been England (probably Southampton).

They could at least have included the contact details and an application form.
