Re: UFC 2009: Demo - SICK

I found the demo to be really fun. It was a bit easy though. Just barrage the strikes and they'll go down. I love it how sometimes when you knock them out their mouth guard comes out. I've started to play the tutorials so I can do more than strike and block. It seems to be both easy to pick up and play whilst being deep enough for regular players.

Re: UFC 2009: Demo - SICK

bloody Liddell and his Superman punch. do NOT let him get that one out, i went striaght down and out since i tried to kick him when he went to do it.

looked pretty wikid though, watching me go down like that :smileyhappy:

now, you can pre-order from EB Games and get exclusive fighters, something that will probably just get unlocked with natural progression of the game.

or you can pre-order from JB Hi-Fi and get a bonus DVD with real footage.

JB for me i think, heading there Tuesday :smileyhappy:

Re: UFC 2009: Demo - SICK

Just played this...here are my thoughts:

1. This is the closest thing I've seen to a real UFC fight. I think this is the first time someone's actually managed to capture the feel of a real MMA fight, and this was the first MMA game I actually enjoyed. I never liked the previous tittles. MMA is a hard sport to recreate in a video game and actually make it fun, but I think THQ have done a fantastic job with this one.

2. The presentation and graphics are spot on. Fighters look life-like, with sweat dripping off their bodies, facial expressions are great, everything is authentic, from the fighters down to the referee, even the real ring girls and camera men. Seeing the camera man come up close to the action when you knock somebody down is gold. It really makes you feel like you're watching a UFC fight...10 points there.

The game is not without it's flaws however:

1. The animations can seem somewhat robotic at times. The way they move around the ring and respond to things isn't very life-like at times, and I think very fluid animation is important if you want to recreate a realistic looking MMA game. I think THQ needs to take a look at EA sports' Fight Night Round 4 and take some notes. When I played NBA 2k9, the first thing that I noticed was how fluid the animations were...from a distance, you could swear you were watching a real basketball match. It isn't too bad, but it can definately be improved on.

2. I hate to say it, but I think the online portion of this game will be doomed. When I booted up the demo, I noticed the gamespy logo. Anyone who's played THQ's Smackdown vs RAW games knows that the online portion of the games are powered by Gamespy...and there matches were so ridiculously laggy, that it wasn't even worth playing. Why THQ repeatedly use Gamespy is beyond me, but I really hope the online in UFC 2009 isn't the same as SvR coz I was really looking forward to some online fighting with this game, and I think it'll kill the replay value big time if people can't play a decent fight online.

All in all, judging by the demo, this is the best MMA experience to grace consoles so far. I think THQ have done a great job, and they can only improve from here. Let's just hope the online portion isn't plagued with the same lag on the SvR games. This is a definate purchase for me and I'll be pre-ordering tomorrow.

Re: UFC 2009: Demo - SICK

I gotta say, after spending more time with this, and in the tutorial, I'm extremely surprised at how well THQ has implemented the grappling in this game. It is near perfect! That was always one aspect in MMA games that was hard to pull off, but I gotta say the grapping in this game is spot on!

Decent game judging by the demo, but the animations just don't cut it. They seem no different than the UFC game on Dreamcast all those years ago.

Exactly my thoughts. Very stiff animations. I reckon EA sports would've done a better job at this game...look at what they are doing with Fight Night Round 4, that game is looking amazing :smileyhappy:
