Re: [minis] Speedball 2 Evolution

Exclusive to Plus at the moment I think.

But this week's store offerings are now up, as far as I can tell, and there's a fair bit of content on there.

Free Arc the Lad on Plus as well - I'm very chuffed! :smileyvery-happy:

Hmmm.

Being playing this on my brothers ps3 (i'm not a plus member).

But as with ALL mini's (when played on the ps3),there is a certain amount of "input lag".

Now,we copied it over to his PSP and the input lag goes away.

Now,being a bit of a coder back in the day (c64,AMIGA)  I told my brother that this is more than likely down to the emulation software causing this lag.As emulators on the PC show.Just ask the developer of WINUAE,there is no way to elimanate lag when emulating via software - Howwever minute this lag is,its will always be there.

He wouldnt have it though - He kept saying its his TV (HDTV lag). - So we connected his ps3 to an old CRT TV via andps2 RGB cable. And its still lagged, ruling out HDTV lag.

It must be the emulation that is casuing this lag (when played on the PS3).There is no other explanation.

Its even more noticable on other games - For example, the AMIGA classics Pinball Dreams & Pinball Fantasies.

Def is something wrong with your setup as I'm playing it on my PS3 and 44inch TV and the controls are sharp, no lag whatsoever...

Hello,thanks for your reply.

I maybe should have made myself more clear in my original post.

This was tested at my brothers home - On 2 different TVs (1 HDTV,other was an old CRT - CRTs have zero "input lag").

I also see the same issue on my 3  HDTVs that i own  - I dont own speedball 2,but i own 4 other psp minis and they show the exact issue.

I'm not sure how large the lag is ...its difficult to messure input lag with any degree of accuracy.

We are talking milliseconds here, its not even a second. But its very noticable once you know its there.

This is not to knock the emulation software, that allows to play minis on our ps3s.

This is the same for all software based emulators on PC,MAC etc. They all suffer from the same issue in some degree (some, more than others)

For example i have AMIGA,c64,snes,mega-drive,MAME (arcade) and countless other emulators. All show the same symptoms.

The trouble with software based emulation is that it has to emulate every frame - And this takes a certain amount of time (milliseconds).

To quote Toni Wilen (WINUAE developer).

It is impossible to have lag free software emulation. Time to emulate single frame is always there.

Now i dont want to put people off buying MNI's for their ps3s.

Because input lag via emulation is like HDTV lag - Its subjective. Its always there, but if you never notice it,its not going to be a problem for you.

Peace out - And  i hope we see more amiga classics.

Re: [minis] Speedball 2 Evolution

Well my man I repeat I have 35 mini's and do not have any lag on them...played Speedball 2 for a while last night and it is as responsive as any other PS3/PSN game...

I also have manu emulators on my PC and suffer no lag and I play some C64 games on this which requires pinpoint accuracy...

I just don't see or feel it but perhaps you are more sensitive to it than me?

I can certainly pass and score goals in Speedball 2 without noticing any lag so it doesn't ruin it for me.

Yep,like i said its subjective (and only milliseconds). So if you dont notice it,or arent bothered by it,its not a problem.

I play emulators all the while on my pcs- And although i notice it,i just accept threres no way round it.

Its just that i seem to notice it more on psp minis (on the ps3)....Oh well.:xCry:

On the subject of retro/amiga games ...I'm playing batman the movie on the amiga and for the life of me i cant get passed the 1st level ...Soooooooooo hard.I used do it without dying back in 80s.

I think modern games have weakend my skills somewhat.Todays gamers would weep at this difficulty curve.

Re: [minis] Speedball 2 Evolution

Is that the one where you have to knock the joker into the vat of acid?

The batmobile and batwing parts of that game were awsome!

I was playing Darkseed last month on my miga emulator...still can't complete it!

Re: [minis] Speedball 2 Evolution

Games were just harder back then for the same reason that they built cars to actually last. If you sell someone something that doesn't last them as long you can sell them more.

Or you can just colour me cynical :smileyhappy:

Yeah ....finally did it last night.

Then saved its state (great thing about emulators).I aint going through that 1st level again, jesus.

The batmobile sequence still impresses today.Easily a match for the Chase HQ arcade machine,in terms of graphics and sensation of speed.

Considering this game was made in 1988-89,the days when most people still used a c64 or zx spectrum.I remember playing this when it first came out and it blew me away.

Infact, everything about the machine blew me away - And to this very day i'm still a huge AMIGA fan.

Just got my CU AMIGA scans from zzap64.co.uk - Every issue of this great magazine, including all coverdisks booklets & posters - A retro fans dream.

Only £8.99 (2 dvds) & very fast deleivery - Highly reccommend.

(they also have scans of many other magazine collections)
