Re: ylod

Sony are only as much to blame as a car manufacturer is when your car breaks down. I understand you're miffed, as I would be, but I'm expecting mine to die any day now. In fact I almost welcome it because I'm sure it has bad HDD sectors and working around them is a pain.

You could just buy another one, swap out the HDD from your old one to lift off whatever you want to external storage? Although that will void your warranty on your new one. Or you could take it to a 3rd party to have it reflowed - it won't work for long afterwards (month or two?) but it will buy you the time to retrieve your stuff.

Use your free PS+ subscription (if you're not a regular subscribed) to upload any (protected) saves to cloud storage.

(edit: ...whilst downloading inFamous...)

And yet I'm on the other end of the spectrum - I'm still playing a launch 60gb fat machine that is what, 5, 6 years old now? And I use it damn near every day, for several hours. I can't believe the manufacturing quality varies that much... They must be very sensitive to the environment they are kept in. I also routinely run the vacuum cleaner around the vents - maybe once every 3 or 4 months...

To have 2 YLOD in 24 hours is insane though.

Re: ylod

I can't belive I paid 500€ to be treated this way.

I've been a loyal customer for three and a half years now. I've bought numerous games over the years and I even recommended my friends to buy their own Playstation 3s.

I got the YLOD just after downloading Little Big Planet from the PSN Welcome Back programme. I was just starting up the game as my Playstation died. Not only is the console broken, but my copy of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is stuck in there (I have the 40gb version so there's no way to get it out).

I've tried to get a hold on the Playstation support, first through Twitter (which is absolutley useless as they only responded using DM:s and you can't aswer them unless the PS Support account follows you back, which they don't).

I've tried calling, but never got through to an actual human beeing. I was also charged and additional 0,8€ per minute while calling the Playstation support.

I would very much like someone from Sony explain to me why the ***** I would not be compensated for this, as this was clearly caused by Sony and the PSN Welcome Back programme.

Re: ylod

Coincidence. Millions of people are downloading the free stuff. For many of them, it's the first time they've made heavy use of their PS3 in years. Given the sheer number of people doing the same thing - downloading the welcome back stuff - it's inevitable that the normal number of hardware failures will seem like they're related to the welcome back stuff. Sorry, you're just unlucky. Your YLOD would have happened anyway.

As they're so fond of saying in science classes, correlation is not equal to cause.

People blaming the [insert-popular-event] here happens every time there's a particular interest in a specific new game or download pack or service or firmware update (and especially firmware updates - again some task that most PS3 users will perform at roughly the same time). Unfortunately, being a random part of the statistics is no consolation if your console suddenly bricks, so it's inevitable that people try to find other explanations. Fight your instincts, people, and learn to be rational!

Re: ylod

Had the exact same problem and Sony said I had to pay to fix it.  Seems awefully convenient.  I wonder how many other people will have this problem.
