Did Sony pull one over on us?

With the recent PSN update, Sony changed the systems you can activate content on from 5 down to 2.

I just deactivated all my consoles, to remove some old PSP's, and went round re-adding my 4 PS3's. The change said, quite clearly, that content purchased prior to the update could still be played on 5 consoles.

When I activated the third console, I was told I was at my 2 console limit. So please tell me, how are we supposed to still be able to play content on 5 consoles if we can't activate them.

I am absolutely furious at this change. I've specifically bought two extra PS3 consoles in the last 4-6 weeks, purely for the ability to purchase content and have access to it on all my consoles. I don't game share with people outside my family, and quite clearly Sony have told us a big, fat, hairy lie in saying old content can still be played on 5 consoles.

Bad form Sony, very bad form. I want my money back, I bought two consoles for this feature alone. Had I known this was coming, I wouldn't have bought them.

Re: Did Sony pull one over on us?

Hmmm, seems a little odd. When I tried to activate the third console, I was told that I'd already reached my 2 console limit, yet when signing into qriocity to manage my account, it tells me there are 3 activated. Go figure.

Re: Did Sony pull one over on us?

Hi there texinick,

The first two consoles activated will be for all content purchased.

The remaining 3 will be for content purchased before November 18, 2011.

If you wish to use 2-activation content on another console, you'll first need to deactivate one console which is activated for it.

As a reminder, any game sharing is still game sharing, content purchased by you is for your use alone. The average person has less than 2 consoles, making 2 activations plenty.

Hope this answers your query.

Thanks for the reply.

It was the odd message saying I'd reached my maximum 2 console activation when I added the third that threw me.  However, the other console appeared in my account anyway.

As for your reminder, I take a little offence to that comment.  You instantly assume everyone is part of a game-sharing syndicate?  The average PERSON may have less than two consoles, but how about families, particularly where the parents are gamers?

Sony, ever since the PS3 came out, have touted this as a feature.  To now turn around and say everyone that uses this feature is doing something illegal is just mind blowing.  The fact that the feature was LEGAL and PROVIDED by SONY does not mean they can suddenly accuse everyone of doing something ILLEGAL.

Not that it's really ANYONE's BUSINESS but...

I'm a 44 year old, gaming, recently separated, father.  When I moved into my own place, I left my PS3 with my ex- because my daughter used it there and I already had an xbox.  After a while I bought myself a new PS3.  I also bought my daughter an Xbox for here so we could share our disk based games.   My current partner, is also a gamer.  She was an xbox gamer, however, because my daughter and I were spending so much time there, we decided we'd buy a PS3 for her place so we could play the games I'd bought on PSN there.  Additionally, because we now had PS3's everywhere, except for my daughter here, I sold her Xbox and replaced it with a PS3.   So.  4 consoles, all purchased by me.  Am I still accused of Game-Sharing?

Sony shafted me, and I'm so ***** it's not funny.  I only bought the last two consoles a few weeks ago, prior to the announcement of the change, but just far enough back that I can't go and return them.  We were going to buy my partners daughter a PS3 too, so that my daughter could play our games when we stay there, but guess what... that's not happening now.

Had they said, well, 2 is enough, but we'll retain the 5 for PS PLUS members, then that would have been fine, but no, apparently, 2 is enough for the average PERSON... because what?  Families don't game???

It's fine.  I'll use the PS3's for the content I've purchased, and for playing Blu-Rays.  But I won't buy anymore digital content, and I won't EVER trust Sony again.

I have three consoles and i split my game purchases over those three. They are MY consoles. I should be entitled to put my purchases on them, i have to agree with OP and think the 2 console policy rule is garbage.

We're all stuck with it now.  Sony dictated that it's now two devices, so be it.  Fortunately, I can show my appreciation with my wallet.

It just so happens, I also have 4 Mac's in my family, and the Mac App Store allows you to run your purchases on all your Mac's :^)   Sadly, they don't have most recent games like MW3 (not that I play COD, COD4 is available) but they do have Borderlands GOTY @ $30AU, GTA 3, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas (each at $7.50AU), assorted Lego games (Batman, Indianna Jones, Star Wars CS & Clone wars) at $25AU.  The Penny Arcade Adventures Precipice of Darkness 1 & 2 are available at $2 each!  DeathSpank, and DeathSpank: The Baconing I picked up for $2 each too.  Modern Combat Domination set me back a whole 99 cents!!

More importantly, I will never, ever trust them again when it comes to their Playstation business. When the PS4 is announced with all it's 'incredbile' features, how can any of us believe that those so-called features won't be stripped away later.

Re: Did Sony pull one over on us?

Well.... I think, like the Linux issue, we can thank the gamesharers for this... maybe if people weren't buying games and sharing them with 4 of their mates, we wouldn't be dropped to the 2 console limit. Not that I ever plan on having more than 1 active PS3 at one time.

Digital download restrictions, as well as actually liking physical media and being able to buy games from retailers on special rather than be held to PSN prices are why as a rule I won't download full size games to my PS3.

Portable devices on the other hand... even though UMD has become a dead format, I've still always bought discs (aside from my 2 "Sony says sorry" games mid-year)... but with the Vita coming in, I start to think that (provided the PSN actually supports plenty of digital games in our region) downloading titles will be the practical way to go. I can see I'll end up deactivating my PSP and just keep it for an old school UMD game device, much like the PS2 is in the bedroom right now.
