Respect to you for admitting to playing these games but I had this problem in Motorstorm Pacific Rift which required 4 player local race or something. However i only had 2 controllers not sure if this still works but I just reassigned the 1 controller so it thought there was 4 people when there was only 1 and the others stood still.
So...try it but like I said sometimes it recognises when the controller has gone offline and boots the people out. Assign 1 enter them in the level, assign 2nd etc etc, play with the 1 and leave the others hanging about 
Hardware requirements for trophies should never be implemented not everyone has or can afford second controllers or peripherals.
Luckily for myself i have played split screen with the girlfriend or friends to achieve second player trophies like on Killzone 3 and Resistance 3.
Burnout Paradise is another one requiring a compatible camera for the Mugshot/Smugshot at the time i had to borrow a PS2 Eyetoy from my niece to achieve the trophy, trophies should all be obtainable out of the box without the need for multiple peripherals extra player trophies should be online requirements only.
