You shouldn't be doing a proper backup and restoring from the backup, if anyone has done that. First it takes a hell of a lot of time, second, you are not refreshing Near which is the point of a system restore.
You only need to copy games/saves just in case.

Incidentally, anyone wishing to find out the MAC address of the nearby routers/access points, don't bother with the software Skyhook or whoever recommend unless you really want it.
On Windows, go to Start and type cmd and hit Enter. XP and before is Start then Run then type cmd.
You should get the command window (white text on black).
In there, type in netsh wlan show networks mode=Bssid and hit Enter.
(You can copy this text but you won't be able to Ctrl+V to paste, instead right-click the top of the window (not on the black part), hover over Edit and then select Paste).
When this is done, you get a list of all the wireless access points your computer can see (with their names next to SSID 1, SSID 2, etc.) and the MACs are listed as "BSSID 1".
You can do this anywhere you can pick up a wireless point, whether you can connect to it or not.
Get the MAC and send to Skyhook. Job done! ![]()

Of course it's legal! It's just a command prompt to show what your computer already knows.
Nothing wrong with it, believe me.

Don't think it's illegal to gather MAC addresses, routers broadcast their MAC address all the time. In fact I believe it was Google driving around in their street view cars who where scanning for routers MAC addresses, geotagging them and submitting them to skyhook in the first place.

Near appears to be working OK for me, but I'm a bit puzzled about a couple of things:
1) Game Goods: Since launch I've received a cue and an avatar for Hustle Kings, a challenge for Katamari, something for Little Deviants and a single playing card via the Uncharted Black Market. My question is what is a typical drop rate for game goods? What triggers a drop? Is it distance travelled, location or just random?
2) Uncharted Black Market: Apart from the single card mentioned above, every time I check this it comes up as zero. Slightly puzzled by the fact that some people have collected loads of stuff via Near yet I've got virtually nowt. The game doesn't explain the actual working of the Black Market, triggers etc.
3) I get a small blue bar appear on the Near button, then it vanishes after a refresh. What is the bar and what does it mean. I thought it might be game good related but nothing ever drops.
Near could do with Sony explaining the nuts and bolts of how it works, the marketing guff on the website doesn't do a good enough job of explaining what we should expect from day to day usage of Near.
