Dumb Question - Can I watch TV without turning on my ps3?

Hi Everyone,

This may be the dumbest question ever, but before i buy it...

Can I turn on our TV and watch TV without turning on the PS3 and starting up the PlayTV software? Or will the PS3 always have to be on in order to be able to watch TV?

If i have to turn it on, then i'm guessing when i turn on my Sony Bravia, that could automatically turn on the PS3? Would I then have to start playtv before i could use it?

Just want the play tv for recording the odd show, but don't really want to have to turn on my ps3 everytime I want to watch normal tv.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Dumb Question - Can I watch TV without turning on my ps3?

Hi there,

Your PS3 and PlayTV combo are completely different from your TV.

The only problem you may have is if you're sharing the RF / coaxial cable between your TV and the PlayTV box - you could get a splitter, or you could use them alternately.

If you have recordings set up, your PS3 can be in standby and it will turn on to record and then switch off again.

If you have a slimline PS3 (120GB-320GB) then you can have Bravia Sync enabled (this means that when you turn on your PS3, your Bravia will turn on, and vice versa)

Re: Dumb Question - Can I watch TV without turning on my ps3?

Hi sbs,

Ok, so to be clear we have one cable to the tv, so the options are:

1) Get a splitter, plug one directly into the back of the TV and one into the Playtv.

- This way, we can use the TV independantly (ie Turn on, change channels etc) without turning on the ps3.

2) Enable bravia sync, so that if i turn on my ps3 it turns on the tv.

3) Both 1 & 2

One final question:

- If i don't use a splitter: If I turn on my ps3 (and the tv turns on automatically), do i have to view the TV and change channels through the PS3? Or will the TV function as normal (ie use the TV remote), as long as the ps3 is on? Do I have to start up the playTv app, or will i be fine to use the TV as normal as long as the ps3 is on.

Thanks again for your help!

Re: Dumb Question - Can I watch TV without turning on my ps3?

Hey again,

Primarily Bravia Sync will just turn both the TV and PS3 on using the either remote. Channel functionality, volume etc can also work.

If you don't have a splitter, you'll only be able to watch TV on either the TV, or the PS3, not both (without changing the cable over to the other device).

If you have the RF cable into the PlayTV unit, you can still use your TV and TV remote for viewing other things (media box, foxtel etc) but to watch TV, you'll need to change the TV to the PS3 channel, and then load the PlayTV app on the PS3 menu.

Hope this clears it up.

Re: Dumb Question - Can I watch TV without turning on my ps3?

Hey Sbs,

Ok, that's good.

I think i'm going to go for the splitter, so i can use the TV normally, plus if I want to record something i can turn on the ps3, start up playtv and i'm good to go..

Thanks again for your help.

NB: let me know if i've got something wrong above, but I think i understand now..

Re: Dumb Question - Can I watch TV without turning on my ps3?

you can watch tv as normal with out using the PlayTV as that needs your PS3 to be on but as long you have your aireal cable to your tv that will works as normal but to use PlayTv you need you arieal into it anways
