Problems with workaround for exporting to XMB- Copy to home menu

31 Replies 2,910 Views Created 29-11-2009

I've tried setting my playtv location setting to "other" to be able to export my recorded clips to the xmb but It doesn't work. I can't see the copy to home menu button.

Does it work for everyone else? Am I doing something wrong.

It's annoying that this function was removed for Australia. I've recorded the show already, i just want to back it up to my larger external hard drive.

Thanks

Here's my experience.  It may be related, or it may not.

1) Record programme to PlayTV

2) Try to change region to "other"

3) Channel scan returns no channels (Because of my region)

4) PlayTV defaults back to "Australia" hence no export functionalilty.

This may be what's happening to you.

Sounds Like what has happened to me too.

Once i change to other, it scans, no channels are found and it seems to go back to Australian NSW settings.

I have also changed to other regions with no luck.

I decided to go into set-up, then full set up to try see if that helps.... I can't get past the no channels/ rescan screen. So I set up for my area again and when i got to my library all my recorded shows had disappeared. :(
I have also tried to change to "other" without anything scheduled to record and this also hasn't helped.

When channels don't appear in the scan, it says either rescan or cancel, which is reverting back to the normal setting. :(

I'm running out of ideas. Hopefully someone works it out soon.

I live in regional Vic and get Melbourne and country stations, picked up the Aus version the day after release, recorded something to test it with the Aus settings, then I rescanned in Other, lost the regional channels but was able to tranfer my recordeing to the XMB to copy to an external drive. Then I put my settings back to Aus and the recording was still in the XMB. So all in all, if you want to copy something to the XMB there is a bit of stuffing around each time with the rescanning but the Aus Playtv can do it.

Yet another example of beaurocracy gone mad.  With TiVo you can copy material from the TiVo to your pc using the home network package, and then copy it to your portable media player or play it from PC as many times as you like. So why cripple PlayTV and prevent exporting to the xmb ?  If people really want to do it they can use the "other" region method, so why take it out in the first place. Why did PlayTV need to cripple it to get the Freeview stamp, but TiVo didnt ?

Hey Aussee, How did you get past the scan part of the menu?
When I scan in Other, it shows up with no channels, then asks to rescan or cancel. I can't seem to move past this point.

Also had you done the update in software for playtv?

I'm assuming when you try to scan in "other" it only scans in VHF, which is why a couple of us who live in regional areas can't pickup any channels (UHF), making it revert back to "Australia" region. In Aussee's case he gets the Melbourne (VHF) as well as the regional (UHF) in his area, so he is able to pickup channels in "other" and use the export to XMB feature.

Everywhere around the world uses VHF which is what PlayTV was only originally able to tune into, it wasn't until the latest firmware that it was able to pickup UHF.

So where are you at Codez ??

I'm in regional NSW, 2 hours from Canberra and 3 hours from Sydney. So your explanation sounds spot on gavsta72.
Now I have to hope that sony eu brings software out to allow us to work around for exporting, or even save to an external device via playtv.
I guess I will just delete what i've recorded once it's been watched. Thanks for all the info guys.

I'm 150km north of Newcastle and rely on there signal (UHF) cuz i have a mountain right behind me which blocks the North Coast signal out of Port Mac (UHF/VHF)

I'm moving into Forster in a couple of months, so i'll get the North Coast signal there, and will be able to use the export to XMB feature.:smileywink:

It's all because Sony went for "freeview" compatibility.. The freeview clowns made Sony remove the export function as well as the skip forward 60 function so you cant skip the commercials.. Personally I would have told freview to get stuffed and released PlayTV unadulterated.  So I will bee keeping my topfield PVR for those shows that I may want to export to the PC.

I rellly hope Sony fix the export issue in a later realease of the software but I doubt it.  Oh and I am in Darwin so UHF only for DVB :(

G'day Codez,

Gavsta72 got it spot on, VHF was the reason I could still pick up the Melbourne channels and then be able to use the "Other" location.  On Sony's part it's pretty dumb that Australia can't use the XMB feature, cause it's a great feature.

I have the current update, the only fault I have is the blu-ray remote only letting me key in on the numeric pad oneHD and not much else.

Considering the amount of time we have being waiting you would think the channel selection would work at least with the update!

It looks like I will have to buy 500 gig Hard drives. Although, that wont help with editing ads or burning to DVD for storage.

500 gig isn't really that much when 1 hour of HDTV can be 4.5 gig of TV....

4.5gb you say.... I recorded One HD the other night (1hr 5 minutes for UFC Wired) and it ended up taking up 7.1gb - altho this is a 1080i channel, so clearly 1080 res takes up more than just 'hd'

Seriously all they would have to have done is somehow tagged the file you exported with the serial number of the PS3 that did it if they were worried people would distribute copies of FREE TO AIR tv..... geez

I know what you mean. I taped UFC last night and it was 6.9 gig :S  I like your idea too. PS3 address stamped on the bottom corner then they can trace where it comes from.
