Updates shouldnt be required all the time to do before playing a game, some updates  cause problems for people and their consoles and due to it be obligated to even play a game what use is it when it makes the ps3 unfunctional

Yes the update to incorperate 3d bluray was good, but not every single update is necessary and should be deeed to the end user in having a choice. If an update in compulsary and the person updates a 5yr old system and that update stuffs it up then Sony should have to repair or replace free of charge, also if that happens its a fair while before the person can play games again so in retrospect the updates could in fact make a person go without their gaming for lengthy durations more to the equal amount of updates released in a year.

i hear what your saying....unfortunately that's how this generation of consoles has rolled! some updates are anti-piracy ...most are fixes for incomplete games because devs are whipped by their publishers release schedules! it is annoying when you buy a game on release day, race home all excited to play it, you boot the ps3 up, open the case while taking a huge whiff of new game smell, slide your disc in super carefully avoiding finger smudges to find you have to wait an extra excruciating few minutes to get your gamer fix! but i'd rather have to wait a few minutes for a patch than have an unplayable or totally broken game!

I dont mind the game updates, when purchasing a new game, just gets annoying doing a system console update all the time and also identifying others who's console goes faulty from a system update. Ok to the update that stopped the Jailbreak thing and the 3d bluray update but the rest are bit pointless ie 3.50 to 3.55.

Doing a system update shouldnt harm the console but it does in some cases, due to this then there should be a warrenty and gaurentee for every console out there that if a fault occurs from a system update its upto sony to fix or replace the system.

if it was an update breaking consoles, there would be a system wide failure causing every console of that type to glitch/fail..... if that happened sony would probably be in the pooh,that's why they test every type of ps3 40gb, 60gb etc(one of the reasons it takes weeks for patches)....the only way i can imagine a ps3 update corrupting your system is if it doesn't gel with game updates...which i think are partitioned or cached separately? there's always the chance your console died of old age...it happens!(i've killed a few) tbh i don't know ,try ringing sony support 1300 365 911 oz or 09415 2447nz or 0900 97669nz

I have to disagree on old age part - old age is about 20yrs not less than 10.

It doesnt happen to everyones ps3, but there is documents and words out all over online that  peoples ps3 crapped out due to an update. hasnt happened to me but have read about it on forums.

I just think having updates quite a few times a yr for the system is taxing, but i wouldnt want my ps3 crapping out due to an update either. 3D bluray was an important update -  but update 3.55 i dont see any point to it being forced, updates should be rare like only once a yr type of thing, unless its introducing a new feature to the ps3, but in the spand of 7-8 mths or less than that there has been 3.42. maybe a few between to read 3.50 and now 3.55

Updates are a requirement of the T&C of the PSN EULA. Of course one does not have to play games on-line or keep the console connected to the net, just like in the old days, but if you choose to connect it and play on-line, those are caveats in doing so I'm afraid.

It's kind of like the whole argument about game ownership. Sadly, those discs we buy, we do not own. We have only brought a "licence" to the game which could in theory be revoked at any time by the publisher. One day it will happen.

WoW you changed the topic quickly, Regardless of anythin Sony should allow the user to decide to download un update, unless it incorperates some major hardware or new feature to the console. The update from 3.50 to 3.55 really didnt do anything worhwhile to anyone, We are Sony;s customers and the updates should be limited in respect to their customers, its pointless updating the firmware continiously when there is no need.

there are only 2 reasons you are forced to update:
1. you are trying to connect to the PSN, doing this requires the latest update because of security and functionality. if you want to access the PSN you must update. if you want to void this you can tell your ps3 to not sign in when you start it up or unplug the internet

2. the game requires the latest firmware to play, if this is the case, the firmware is provided on the dist too

The Updates are definitely necessity if you wish to keep it secure or enjoy the new features. Funny as I recall reading a post of yours in regards to this security issue, I for one would definitely have my console updated whenever a new one comes out.

You did read the T&C didn't you? If it's in regards to the update causing systems to fail then I'm afraid I have to back up what was said previously, if the update is the cause of system failures, there would be millions of consoles out there with the same issue.

In the end you are not forced to update, if you simple don't agree then you forfeit your online capabilities and this is through your choice and yours only.

At the time it did actually for Sony at least.  

Hackers had figured out how to downgrade a console from 3.50 to 3.41 so the jailbreak could be used on it. Previously once a user had upgraded past 3.41, JB's were unusable on that console. Whatever method was created for downgrading no longer works on 3.55 to my knowledge.

All of the constant updates recently and removal of features have been a result of Sony trying to combat anti-piracy. That war appears to be lost now however. But if you're looking for someone to have a whinge about try hackers.
