This is something else that has really bugged me about StarHawk. Ground troops have no real defense against the machines now. In WarHawk, I always thought the binocs were a bit TOO overpowered as it could be abused a bit easily. With that being said, I thought it was a great weapon for foot soldiers to use against the machines or when your base was under attack. Personally, I believe the binocs should have derived in the form of an EMP/freeze type of weapon to temporarily knock out anything computer opperated, including jetpacks. This would serve as a balance to the mech's/hawk's rift bomb nuke on ground troops or a heavily guarded base with auto turrets and APC tank-like vehicles set up everywhere. I believe such a weapon would force teams to work together more as a unit in all departments rather than players thinking that if they build enough machines that they can easily overpower the other team.
To many times have I witness great ground pounders unable to fend off a wave of attacks from both hawks, tanks, jeeps, etc due to them not having enough ammo or the proper ammo suited enough for the task. While those that don't bother learning the ground get off with a free pass when they pound these guys with their machines. I think the battlefield should be rounded in both directions in case you don't have the currency to built or get hold of these machines.
What do you guys think?

I really wish they wouldn't have thrown out the binocs for a shotgun. This was not innovative at all nor does it replace the binoculars at all like the hawk's weapons have done. Moreover, in Warhawk, when slots were depleted on the troop's weapon select map, Incognito implemented things like the bio mines and the wrench in a update that allowed these weapons to appear under the knife and the land mines. Something similar could be added with an EMP type of weapon, i think.

i think the ground game needs a weapon that can rival the mecks torpedo aka tow , the air weapons have made sure ground players will have no chance even if they are jet packing , flack gun can smack jet pack users out of air

Not nearly as much if you have to fly some place to collects it's ammo. If you can't build a mech or even this new APC-like tank, which costs a lot more than a hawk, ground troops have no defense against these guys. Like WarHawk, they need to give the troops a weapon effective enough against the machines without you having to occupy one to even the odds. The hawks got a boost in fire power and durability while troops were given a shotgun. This is not fair. The binoculars should have been replaced with another sugical strike-like attack weapon for the machines. An EMP would have been perfect for this, not a shotgun. This doesn't nothing against the machines and esspecially a mech or tank.

Is the shotgun not a replacement for the flamethrower? (both short range weapons...)

From what I understand, the Grinder is the replacement for the Flamethrower.
There's brief footage of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPk1LzGt_l4
