I found a handy glitch on this mission, gives you free money.

 

I kept dying in the shootout so i hogtied the guy instead, stuck him on my horse and rode out into the great plains (not very far). When there I cut him free and killed him, then searched the corpse to find $200. Head back into town and he's still outside the saloon (Y)
