Some of you know already i have the Resistance 2 beta. i got it from the pre-order of the collectors edition. Its the american pre-order. There is nothing dodgy about ordering it though, the collectors edition is not avaliable in the UK. James Stevenson (the Insomniac rep) has said there is nothing wrong with people buying the american collectors edition as an import, as they have no plans to release it in the UK and they have no plans to make it region locked. I believe it was Sony Europe´s decision not to release the collectors edition in the UK, as they would have to translate to all european languages and felt it was unfair to give it to the english speaking UK only.
Been playing it for a little while now so will jot down a few early thoughts on the beta.....
Its a fair bit different from the first game, the gameplay has changed a fair bit though it maintains a similar "feel" its borrowed alot from COD4, halo, unreal and TF2 in different areas. Its taken a little while to get into it but once you do its certainly a great game
There are some of the same guns from the first game and some brand new ones everything has been slightly tweeked in line with gamer feedback to even out the online weapons and dillute advantages you previosly had. In the beta you now "load out" your weapon selection before repawning and are able to pick up dropped weapons by holding square
It can take a few shots with pretty much any weapon to kill people, its not like COD4 which is nearly one hit kill, so if you hate that you may find it a stumbling block but you can get over it once you get used to it. It makes for a bit more action at times because there are so many players you´d be killed instantly when i big group fires on you, this way you can survive a few seconds and can get stuck into massive attacks a bit more. There will be the option of course in custom games to play one hit kill or change the weapon damage modifier
The game has 60 player online, which works really well. There´s dedicated servers so no lagg but being a beta it does occationally freeze or kick you out, though very occationally. Compared the Socom beta i played this is as smooth as silk
If you played the first game the 60 player maps are probably twice the size of the old 40 player maps...really huge. The teams of 30 are broken down into sqauds which you respawn with and have various objectives to complete primarily against a squad from the other team. You can however, wander off into another area and effectively mix with all the 60 players. The main objective based mode in the beta is called "skirmish" and this has you running around to attack or defend capture points and kill or defend primary targets or VIP´s. A cool feature of this is the VIP seems to be the player who has the most points with that life, so if you´re doing well you become the taget for everyone on the other team to kill....thats a blast.
The co-op is a seperate campaign in itself against AI and you can play with up to 8 players online. In this mode you can pick different classes and have to work together to complete objectives and kill enemies as you would in a single player. Its not as easy as you may think and the squad really has to work together to keep everyone alive. Some of the massive monsters and rush attacks from the AI are brilliant.
From playing this beta its plain to see this game is going to be massive with hours upon hours of great play and this is barring most the maps, modes and all the single player. It may take a little while to get into as its a different play style to you COD4-aholics and a slight change on the style from the first game, you may also not like the alien weaponry but really this game is jam hot!...loads of options, great online, hours of play........a must buy!
