Amalur or Dragon's Dogma?

My RPG fatigue has finally subsided and i'm ready to get back in the game. I'm a massive fan of all the recent Bethesda games (FO3, FO:NV and Skyrim) and Demon's and Dark Souls, but am having trouble decideding on my next RPG.

It's between Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Dragon's Dogma.

I have played the demos for both and just can't make my mind up. Dogma seems to have GOW-styled hack 'n' slash combat, which i'm really not a fan of.

Areas of importance for me in an RPG are: solid combat mechanism, good storyline, a sensible inventory control system, not too much grinding required, and diversity of enemies. Graphics and presentation are important too I guess, but more of a 'nice to have' once more of the above key areas are sorted.

Has anyone played a decent amount of both games? Any thoughts on the matter would be much appreciated.

Please use plain text.

I played the demo for Amalur which put me right off it - the combat was good, but everything else felt weak.

I'm currently about 30 hours into Dragon's Dogma and would highly recommend it to any fantasy RPG fan...

The combat doesn't remind me of God of War at all. I would say the game is a happy combination of Oblivion (exploration), Dark Souls (combat) and Shadow of Colossus (clinging onto big things and stabbing them). Have a quick browse of this thread if you need more encouragement :smileyhappy:

Re: Amalur or Dragon's Dogma?

Dragon's Dogma, easily.  Amalur is good, but it feels kinda.... stale, after a while.  Like you're not really interacting with the world- Dogma lets you interact literally, by being able to grab just about anything and anyone!  :smileyvery-happy:

Amalur is a prettier game, mind- much more colourful too, and the combat flows a little better IMO.  But still... it doesn't let you cling to the back of a Griffin, stabbing away at it mid-flight as it tries to throw you off.  :smileyhappy:

Plus, as someone with Kirin in their name, I have a feeling Dragon's Dogma is going to give you more of what you want :smileywink:

Re: Amalur or Dragon's Dogma?

Thanks for the repiles guys, the message i've been getting from everyone i've spoken to about it is that Dragon's Dogma is the better game; I guess (as I already knew) that you shouldn't judge a game by its demo.

That link you posted makes it sound pretty epic InfinteStates. I saw a video that I think someone posted on here about how a guy had played for 50 hours and had probably uncovered between a quarter to a third of the map, so looks pretty huge.

OmegaPyrate, no need to worry about it being colourful, tight gameplay and an interesting story are the most important aspects to me. I'm getting the impression that effectively this game is like Skyrim's slightly less attractive sister that seriously knows her onions once you get her home?

I've just bought ME3, so will probably pick up DD when I have completed that, which hopefully should be nicely in time for a first price drop!

InfiniteStates is that because DD's developer is Eastern and KOA's is Western or because there is someone called Kirin in the game?

Re: Amalur or Dragon's Dogma?

Depends what you want.

Amalur has easier and less epic combat, but it also has a story with greater scope. Although it's scope you have to dig around for... a lot.

I can't really, from what I've seen of both (haven't finished either one yet) say that either one has a particularly GOOD core story, but there's more of a good backstory behind Amalur.

Also, from what I've heard friends talking about, there's less of a grind in Amalur, but grinding in Dogma gives you epic moments that reduce the struggle of grinding.

I assumed you took Kirin from Monster Hunter, and there are similarities between that and Dragon's Dogma.

This.

Though I never did finish Amalur. Got like 5 hours away from the end and then just kind of... went back to Skyrim. It was just bad timing.

A word on that, actually- while Gransys is certainly not a small place (the lack of any kind of fast travel/taxi option adds to that) the in-game map is a bit of a troll.  Most of the map has been revealed to me and about 50% of it to the west looks like "uninhabited/inaccessible lands" to me.  I could be wrong- *checks google images* - nope, I'm right,,,,,,  It's not as massive as it would have you think.

But as I said, it's far from small.  :smileyhappy:
