Great initiative! I'd also love to be able to battle it out with anyone, simply because not many on my PSN friends list owns SingStar and fewer still are likely to want to sing at the same time as I do. And as for the problem of different songs/discs owned, an easy solution would be to add a filter in this lobby to only show people with the same disc inserted (i.e. if you're playing SingStar Queen, show only others with this same disc in their PS3). This way we can avoid entering a battle with someone only to discover we don't have any common tracks to choose from.

You mentioned a tally of sorts,

after you have finished your song and get to the points screen (the one with the rising barcode), at the bottom there is an ongoing score there, one under each name. I know this as sadly i had 5 - 0 on songs against me, i really am poo, but still enjoy the trying to sing part.

I've been lucky enough to play a few battles against a real life friend, but this involves strategic military planning of what time to be online on what day and what disc.

i've had some issues with the system black screening when entering songs and having to restart the ps3 but that is for another thread.

as for the lobby, i think it's already been mentioned by  sny83, the lobby should perhaps list a players name, country they are in (or primary language spoken), followed by which disc they currently have in their system (as you have to have one in to go online), that way, if you have the same disc inserted, you have at least 20 or 30 songs to go at, then just talk about which other songs/disc you may have with the other player once in the battle screen (as long as you have online chat enabled).

I'd also like the option of uploading media recorded from PS2 discs to my singstar online, why be able to play the songs from the disc, save the media but no be able to do anything with it.

Would love this feature great post by the way having recently returned to the playstation fold so to speak I've managed to get singstar now and am just waiting on 100+ songs to be unlocked so that I can redownload them and get some battles done...although i'm not very good LOL.
