Manchester United vs Liverpool (12:45 GMT)

133 Replies 732 Views Created 13-03-2009

Manchester United have no fresh injury concerns as they look for a 12th successive win.

Carlos Tevez and Anderson could be brought in to freshen things up.

Spanish winger Albert Riera will return to the Liverpool squad after suspension while Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard should both be fit.

Midfielder Yossi Benayoun is still out with a hamstring injury and Daniel Agger is unlikely to have recovered from his back injury.

Manchester United squad: Van der Sar, Foster, Kuszczak, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Eckersley, Fabio, Ronaldo, Nani, Fletcher, Gibson, Carrick, Anderson, Giggs, Scholes, Park, Berbatov, Rooney, Tevez, Welbeck.

Liverpool provisional squad: Reina, Aurelio, Skrtel, Carragher, Hyypia, Aurelio, Dossena, Babel, Mascherano, Gerrard, Alonso, Kuyt, Torres, Lucas, Cavalieri, Ngog, Riera, Insua, Spearing, El Zhar.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
"Liverpool have always been our main rival - it does not matter what the position in the league. As far as I am concerned, it has always been the derby game.

"It will always be that way because of the geography and history of the two cities.

"We are the two most successful football clubs in England. When they get together you expect sparks to fly."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez:

Benitez hoping for Real repeat

"If we don't win it will be very difficult to win the title. If we want to be in the title race we have to win at Old Trafford.

"If we can play at the same level as we did against Real Madrid, then we can beat anyone.

"The problem this season is that we were so close, top for so long, that expectations were very high."

BIG-MATCH FACTS

The quintuple is still on for Manchester United, following Wednesday's victory over Inter Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Victory in this "Battle of the Titans" with Liverpool, would leave the Red Devils 10 points clear of the Merseysiders with a game in hand, and needing another seven wins to guarantee a hat-trick of Premier League titles and a share of Liverpool's record of 18 English top-flight championships.

Liverpool visit Old Trafford eager to transfer their Champions League form into the Premier League, in the wake of Tuesday's impressive 4-0 hammering of Real Madrid. They've lost just one of 17 top-flight outings and must win to close the gap on United to four points to keep alive fading hopes of the title.

Victory for the visitors will be Liverpool's 100th Premier League win under Rafa Benitez, but he has never masterminded a Liverpool victory at Old Trafford. It would also be Sir Alex Ferguson's 150th top-flight defeat in charge of United. Ferguson leads Benitez by seven wins to two in their 10-match head to head duel. One game has been drawn, and all but one of those were in the Premier League. The exception was Liverpool's victory in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Anfield on 18 February 2006.

Liverpool had failed to score in seven successive Premier League meetings with Manchester United before winning the reverse fixture 2-1. Now they're looking to complete a first double over the Red Devils in seven seasons, and a third over them in the Premier League era. Only Arsenal have beaten United home and away three times in this league.

United are bidding for a fifth successive home league victory over their fierce rivals.

Distance between the clubs: 35 miles (59 kilometres)

CLUB FORM

MANCHESTER UNITED

1st 65 points
Highest achievable after Saturday's matches: 1st
Lowest could fall: 1st

1. Won the last four and all but one of the last 16 in all competitions, losing just one of 31.

2. Won the last 11 Premier League matches, against Stoke (a), Middlesbrough (h), Chelsea (h), Wigan (h), Bolton (a), West Brom (a), Everton (h), West Ham (a), Fulham (h), Blackburn (h) and Newcastle (a).

3. Victory here would make this their best ever Premier League sequence of 12 successive victories, and leave them one short of Arsenal's Premier League record of 13.

4. Unbeaten in 16 league games; won 14 and drawn two since losing 2-1 away to Arsenal on 8 November - their only loss in 23 top-flight outings.

5. Four points up on their total to this same stage last season, and one point down on the corresponding juncture in the previous year (both title-winning campaigns).

6. Scored in each of the last 11 league games. Failed to score in one of 14 (0-0 away to Tottenham on 13 December), and missed the target in only two Premier League matches all season; the other being 0-0, away to Aston Villa on 22 November.

7. Challenging for a 13th consecutive home league victory. They are undefeated in 18 at the Theatre of Dreams in a sequence stretching back over a year. Won 17 and drawn one (v Newcastle, 17 August) since losing 1-2 against Manchester City on 10 February 2008 - their only defeat in 32 at home.

8. Need to score once to become the first club to total 700 home goals in Premier League history.

9. Only registered one victory against a fellow 'Big Four' club in the Premier League this season; 3-0, home to Chelsea. Of the others, they have lost away to Liverpool and Arsenal, and drawn away to Chelsea.

10. The next home league fixture after this will be against Aston Villa on 5 April.

LIVERPOOL

3rd 58 points
Highest achievable after Saturday's matches: 2nd
Lowest could fall: 3rd

1. Defeat at Middlesbrough in their last away game on 28 February was only their second in 35 Premier League matches.

2. The current total of 58 points after 28 games is five points up on last season and their best ever return to this stage of a Premier League campaign. Their previous best to this corresponding juncture was 60 points in the 1990-91 campaign, when they finished runners-up.

3. Lost just one of 14 league games in which they've opening the scoring; away to Spurs.

4. Scored 11 of their 45 league goals in the last 10 minutes.

5. Won five of nine league games in which the opposition have opened the scoring, and lost just once; away to Middlesbrough.

6. Yet to lose to a top-half club.

7. Not lost to a fellow 'Big Four' club this season; beaten Chelsea home and away, and Manchester United at home ,and drawn away to Arsenal.

8. Not lost a North-West league derby since tumbling to a 3-0 defeat in this corresponding fixture on 23 March last year; won 10 and drawn three in that order of the 13 subsequent top-flight matches in the region.

9. This match precedes the home clash with Aston Villa on 22 March.

KEY PLAYER NOTES

MANCHESTER UNITED

Edwin VAN DER SAR is leading the race for the Barclays Golden Glove with 18 clean sheets.

Cristiano RONALDO is Manchester United's top Premier League scorer with 12 goals.

Paul SCHOLES needs a hat-trick to reach 100 Premier League goals - all for United.

Ryan GIGGS is a hat-trick shy of 150 goals for Manchester United.

If selected:-

Tomasz KUSZCZAK will be making his 50th career league appearance.

If on the field from the outset:-

RONALDO will be making his 150th Premier League start - all in United colours.

LIVERPOOL

Jose REINA is the only remaining player to have been on the field for every minute of every one of Liverpool's Premier League matches this season.

Jamie CARRAGHER is the only other player to have started all of Liverpool's Premier League games this term.

Steven GERRARD is the club's top Premier League scorer with nine goals.

HEAD TO HEAD

Three players have been sent off in the last four Premier League meetings of these clubs; Nemanja Vidic and Paul Scholes (Manchester United) and Javier Mascherano (Liverpool).

Liverpool have not won at Old Trafford since a 0-1 triumph on 24 April 2004, courtesy of a second-half penalty from Danny Murphy.

The Merseysiders have only done the double over Manchester United twice in the Premier League; 2000-01 and 2001-02.

Home and away
League (inc PL): Man United 58 wins, Liverpool 50, Draws 43
Prem: Man United 18 wins, Liverpool 8, Draws 7

at Man Utd only
League (inc PL): Man United 36 wins, Liverpool 14, Draws 25
Prem: Man United 9 wins, Liverpool 3, Draws 4

LAST SEASON'S CORRESPONDING GAME

Manchester United 3-0 Liverpool
23 March 2008 - Ref: Steve Bennett
Man Utd scorers: Brown 34, Ronaldo 79, Nani 81
Sent Off: Mascherano (Liverpool) 44

THIS SEASON'S REVERSE FIXTURE

Liverpool 2-1 Manchester United
13 September 2008 - Ref: Howard Webb
Liverpool scorers: Brown 27 og, Babel 77
Man Utd scorer: Tevez 3
Sent Off: Vidic (Man Utd) 90

All the above was taken from: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7922069.stm

My prediction is: Man United 2-1 Liverpool (Rooney, Carrick and Gerrard).

Try and keep all coversation about the match and try not to personally attack people otherwise this thread will be locked.

Yeah well done we couldn't deal with Torres and you deserved the win today, however 4 point lead with a game in hand still, and Vidic wasn't last man so that red should be revoked, otherwise well played liverpool.

Nah he's just been poor all season the puff, he's lost that ability to just burst past people and he's not hungry, his one dream is to play in spain as he keeps saying well off you trot then son, Messi is light years ahead of him at the moment.

Well done Pool but you still won't win the title. Now just brace yourself for the immature Pool fans that will be on later.

Totally agree with you.

Hopefully there's a heck of a hair-dryer now in dressing room, the United team need to buck up their ideas, we've been poor this last while, and I don't even think we've played all that well all season.

that was totally amazing, at 2-1 i was so convinced united would score i put a fiver on it! then aurelio put in that SWEET free kick! i'd pay a fiver every match if he scored one of those every time!

It's still very unlikely we'll win the title, but it'll certainly make things more exciting!

Not a fun game for a United fan; but I'm sure the league title will console us somewhat.

Well played Liverpool - you were the better team today. Shame your fans let you down; I've already had half a dozen texts from Liverpool supporting mates I've not seen or heard from for ages. Typical.
