Well that makes you a lucky one. Not saying that it's impossible to avoid getting base raped when it starts, but many times my escape attempt is stopped by a tank shot or a hawk stalking me. But your strategy does make sense, the only bad thing is that if the enemy took all the bases, and destroyed your outpost afterwards.....you would need to get out the way and capture another base before you were out of rift and bases.

Ive just been on the losing team in a rape and experienced first hand the inability to grasp basic skills by some players.
Whilst most of my team were spawning bang centre of the tanks and hawks I spawned outer edges and headed of creating outposts with turrets and in effect a place for others to spawn.
3 people out of my team of 11 used my outpost spawns
3
The rest were thick enough tO continue spawning in the main base as cannon fodder . Probably the same saps that complain that they. Can't get out of a rape.
The only thing that's severely unbalanced in this game is some players intelligence
The highest death rate in my team was 51 deaths
I had 4
Why...... Because I didn't hang around the homebase I actually got out Something which by all accounts is impossible.
Tried that , didn't work ... I don't tend to spawn directly on tanks or hawks when being base raped, i tend to spawn in quiet regions or edge of spawn area. The problem is that the game shows exactly where you spawn and it takes a hawk 2 seconds to get there to stamp you.
The unlimited supplies of hawks also ruins the game, witnessed first hand with a base rape that the moment a building went up they would just crash into it to destroy it.
Getting fed up with it to be honest and it stops me from playing the game.

Your right players should strive to escape a baserape but at times its hard & a lot of players are focused on that one aspect of the game defend the flag dont lose too many....
The game also does'nt ask players to do ANYTHING!!!!
Apart from the win 100 games of zones......ctf.......death matches........to get your trophy's
The rest can be mopped up playing the campagne...
Unlike Warhawk where we chased badges & medals to rank up we're not asked to do any of that here so the better players can just use there skills to kill kill kill......
I'm not saying they would'nt baserape if they had goals to achieve but it might of helped..

I can understand why people get frustrated by base rapes, but to clarify , a base rape is when the enemy come into your spawn area and put down turrets buildings etc.
I have no problem with a heard of tanks running around the enemy base, destroying everything in site, but putting down turrets bunkers etc is not on.
we continually raised this issue with the developers during the beta, don't let the enemy build within your spawn area of influence. But they did nothing about it !
That said I ran my ps3 all afternoon as a server with no hawks and a message about no base raping, it appeared everyone was good sportsman enough to not build inside the spawn point.
Doesn't mean I didn't get my ass kicked a few times by tanks inside the base , but they didn't build in it.
It just goes to show that most people can be sportsmen.
As for spawn points , there are a few areas on the map inaccessible by ground troops , I set up a spawn point , shield and tank deployment here away from the base, the enemy cant get to it and if you spawn to it you can pick up a tank immediately.
another tactic I use is as supplier, I set my skill to earn more rift energy,
put down a tank deployment, then keep calling up tanks , drive them off the ramp- then call another.
Friendlies finally caught on, and started jumping into them and away. Good for when your face with an enemy tank convoy.

I agree to the total opposite of this statement.

Okay, 51 deaths is a bit of a deathwish, but you probably only escaped because everyone else was sitting in the base. If everyone made a run for it, the enemy wouldn't have been distracted and would have been hunting runners. And I also expect a lot of players were trying to land on the enemy as a legitimate gameplay defense, only the landing targets let the enemy know where to move out the way.
