This is a really useful forum. I had no clue why all of a sudden my machine turned off and it won't turn back on again... after reading through this I believe i have got the yellow light of death unfortuantely... and had my beloved GT5 stuck inside the console..Thanks to the trick on this lead i was able to eject my disk.. but now my ultimate question.. would i be able to preserve my hard disk.. I really don't want all my progress on GT5 ot be buried with the machine... Can i take the hard disk out and use it on another PS3??
Or better... is there really no way to repair the YLOD?? Please help.. thanks people.

you cant put your hd into another ps3 as it will reformat the drive. you can try to fix ylod yourself or get others to do it. you can send it to sony but from what i hear you might not get your own console back, so that wont help you. look on ebay and there are listings for YLOD ps3 fix, cost about $90. i tried to fix it myself but it didnt work. also there are vids on youtube about how to fix it. i wont post a link because last time i did a mod scrapped the links because it showed a ps3 being opened. they might even delete this post just for talking about it, who knows. maybe if sony made a console that didnt feel the need to kill itself we wouldnt need to talk about it at all.....
