Out of all devices connected to the Internet that includes PCs, Macs, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, iPhone etc. I found that the PS3 seems to be the slowest on downloading. Things like game updates and firmware updates are very annoying. I get decent speeds but it's nowhere as fast as downloading on my other devices. I can download for example a 2GB demo on Xbox Live in around 15-20 mins. The same file size on PS3 takes around 30-45 mins.
Must be something your end then. They are both downloading at nearly the same speed in my home.
Blades Of Time, Demo = 695MB from Playstation Store took me from 10:47 - 10:53 = Six minutes to ( download ) then took ( 1 minute to install ) Total = Seven Minutes.
Blades Of Time, Demo = 700MB from Xbox Live Store took me from 11:08 - 11:15 ( downloaded and installed ) Total = Seven Minutes.
Only 5MB difference between the two Demos. This would be ( on my connection ) about ( 5 seconds ) download difference.
So XBL is not faster than Playstation Store when it comes to downloading. If it was made to be slower it would have also effected me wouldn't it. ( but that's clearly not the case ).

It can depend on a number of things like net connection and the amount of people also downloading the same item.
My download is pretty fast with it being a 1mb a second DL. So it takes me excatly the amount of seconds to download a item as the same size as the file.
Sometimes though for something like a massive launch demo E.G Fifa 13, I'll wait the next day to get a fast download, cause it does tend to slow when you have the whole of europe downloading it to.

I was having this problem today trying to patch bf3 - the PS3 estimated the d/l time for the 1.5gb patch at 1020 minutes, which is around 16 hours. 16 hours for a 1.5gb download reminds me of the internet 15 years ago, and that's not cool.
I wasn't keen for searched a few forums and most answers indicated the PS3's wireless receiver is pretty crap, and I have one of the early consoles, so imaginably, mine would be worse than newer models and especially worse than the slims, though i dont know that for sure.
I went out and bought a new ethernet cable to run between my modem and my PS3, and the download is now at 80% after only an hour =)
So, if anyone is having this problem, use an ethernet cable and your download speed should increase by like 500%, and you should be able to play that game the same day you bought it!
