I've got the exact same problem!
I updated the software this morning to 3.56 and my system works fine.
My new hard drive came by UPS this afternoon and I installed it properly.
Seagate Momentus 500GB 5400 RPM.
I checked its compatible with the PS3.
I created the USB with the proper folders PS3/UPDATE/ and put the update file I just downloaded from sony's website into it. I press START and SELECT and it comes back with an error code.
It says "the data is corrupt" (8002F225).
I tried 4 different USB drives and have tried re downloading the update and it all leads back to the same place?
I just put my original HD back in and the system works fine. The problem is with the update file posted on the Sony website.
I read somewhere that this same thing happened with the 3.41 update a while back.
Any Solutions yet??

Just posting to say that It is now fixed as long as you have your old UNformatted HDD.
I got mine to work by
1. Put your old HDD in
2. Download the optional 3.56 Update Via internet or USB (its on the Support site)
3 (Optional). Back Up your Old HDD to a FAT32 Formatted External HDD
4. Put in your New HDD and a USB Stick with the new 3.56 on it.
5. Follow the on screen Instructions.
6. Restore your old data back on to your New HDD.
7. Voila IT WORKS
(Mine is restoring as we speak)
I am trying to upgrade my HDD today again after updating the software to 3.56. I am following the instructions as they were posted online on how to change out the drive, format and reinstall the drive. After turning the system and following a few instructions it tells me to press START and Select at the same time to search for the 3.56 software update; a few minutes later I get the same error message and code ("the data is corrupt" (8002F225).
After trying several USB drives, burning the file to CD-R, I tried searching for the error code on the us.playstation.com site only to find that they claim that code doesn't exist. After that I did a google search for the code and found this posting.
got the same problem, having "hardrive is corrupt" errors constantly for days, so i remove the drive, and do a low level format on it. and now i cant reinstall the update!
yeah, im just sat looking at a Data is corrupted screen, trying to source the fw update from somewhere that isnt corrupted
SO MANY newly registered members suddenly wanting to change HDD's after the 3.56 update...

Another update, someone posted on the AU forum (who is in the UK) that Sony confirmed at 4.45 that there is a problem and a fix is being looked at now.
i have the exact same problem i hit 99% and it fails with the same error code i called tech support and was told to send it in at a cost of 150$ *****..
My new 750GB Western Digital HDD arrived today, and I'm getting the same corrupted error message when trying to install the 3.56 firmware. Tried various USB card readers and USB sticks, same issue. Thankfully I didn't format my old 250GB drive.
Please please can you call Sony technical support and advise them of this, the more people the better.
I just rang AGAIN and was told they don't know what to do??? They suggested putting the old hard drive in and try again? I don't see how that would work as the old drive is now formatted.
Out of interest...what Operating System is everyone using when downloading and creating folders for the update then transferring it to an external?
Ubuntu. Though I have used XP to do it in the past.
I've been lucky with mine, as I updated my puny 60GB drive to a 640GB just before 3.41 came out - the other firmware which caused this issue.
I'm sure it won't take long for a fix...
I'm concerned though because I have spoken to 4 different people at Sony throughout the day and not one of them has heard of this problem, so I'm kinda wondering if:
A) The latest update has stopped the upgrade of a hard drive
B) My console is busted!
That sucks i received today my 640 gb hard drive and i trying to slove this problem all f.. day , and of course i did f... stupid usless upgrade.
