Backup/Restore after YLOD questions

[ Edited ]

My 40GB Fat PS3 has a YLOD. I have a replacement slim now.So now I need to try and get my saved games back. I believe I needed to resurrect my fat PS3 with a reflow, then do a backup, then restore to the slim, yeah? Well I've had a couple of goes at the reflow but it's still dead. If I borrow or buy another 40GB Fat unit and I swap the hard drives over, will my drive boot up in the other Fat unit and allow me to back it up? Do I have any other options?

Thanks

Re: Backup/Restore after YLOD questions

Sorry, that won't work.

When you put your HDD into the other 40GB it will format it...If you could get your PS3 going you could do a data transfer that will take everything off your 40GB and put it onto your new one. This is another/easier option rather than going down the backup/restore route.

Re: Backup/Restore after YLOD questions

Grr.. imagine if PCs were built like that, so if you had a MB failure, it rendered the contents of your HDD lost. Well, I imagine Sony have been slagged off enough for this already. So, I need to get the YLOD properly repaired. But what is this direct data transfer you speak of? Do you have a link I can read?

This should help - you will still need your 40gb PS3 to be working long enough for the transfer to complete though.

Thats the thing a console is not meant to be a PC.

Also that's why sony moved away from the PHAT so soon as normaly like the Ps1 and ps2 we would have had a longer wait for a slim version.

Below is a Signature

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

Re: Backup/Restore after YLOD questions

OK, cheers for the info guys. I guess I need to work on my YLOD.. hmm.. should I give it a third go or just take it in somewhere.. I fear I might be doing more damage than good!

Re: Backup/Restore after YLOD questions

OK, so after a repair effort by me and another by a shop, I still have YLOD. The shop reckon I probably burned the CPU or GPU when I did my effort. :Stupid: So now I'm wondering what the PS3 uses as the 'key' for the encryption. Is it in the CPU or GPU so that if I get those replaced, is it effectively a different PS3 and it'll just format the HDD anyway? Or does it go off the serial number perhaps? (assuming that's not in the CPU?)

Thanks

Sorry to hear about your problem.

PS3's HDD encryption is different for each console so it'll ask you to reformat no matter what model PS3 it is.

Re: Backup/Restore after YLOD questions

OK, but my point was WRT what consitiutes a different console? If I swap out the GPU and CPU, is that still still the same console as far as the HDD encryption is concerned? So I'd still be using my old console, but with a new CPU and/or GPU.

i got YLOD on my old 60GB model, and had black ops stuck in it and had no back up at the time!
i did the hair dryer trick and bam it worked first time, managed to boot up the ps3 to get my blackops and enough time to even do a full back up of the system! it still work long enoguh for me to trade it in a CEX ;-) LOL
