My old PS3 (80gb fatty) bit the dust recently so I have bought a new one (slim).

I had already created a backup previously of the old PS3 and successfully restored it when I upgraded the HDD for it.

So, I thought that I would simply be able to restore that backup again to my new PS3 but apparently this isn't the case?

When I choose to restore it, the progress bar gets to 99% and then it hangs for a few seconds and then gives me an error message along with the code 800283E7. It then restarts and I'm back to square one.

I have tried to restore it before and after putting my account onto the new console, I have activated my new PS3 and as I have restored it before to the old machine I know the backup isn't corrupt or anything like that.

Luckily I had also copied all of my gamesaves manually to another device so I should be able to put those back (bar the 'locked' ones).

After a bit of searching on Google I came up with nothing else that I can try or see anything that I am doing wrong except for a few suggestions that you cannot restore a backup to a different console - is this correct?

Well, I decided to just try it again this morning and..... it worked!

No idea why as I didn't do anything different.

But, while my profile, game saves etc have been restored (except for the locked ones of course - who's stupid idea was it to tie game saves to one console??! ) none of the 'game data' has been restored. Is this supposed to happen? I know I can re-install data / updates etc but it would have been nice not to have to do that!

I does mean though that my son has lost all of his creations for Modnation Racers. The regular game save is there but not the seperate file for the mods

Oh well, can't be helped I suppose. Does mean I have to start Silent Hill Downpour from scratch too and I was a fair chunk through the game

Glad to hear that you have managed to restore your data.  The error code 800283E7 normally indicates that the backup data is corrupted so its lucky you managed to restore it!
