Changing HDD in PS3 60gb Model.

9 Replies 1578 Views Created 23-11-2008

Im thinking about changing the HDD in my ps3 to 320gb and was just wondering if i used the Backup Utility on the ps3, will it backup everything on my 60gb HDD including, game saves, music, pictures, themes, videos and my PS3 Home Beta which i recently installed??

Would i have to reinstall the PS3 Home, but i know that you can only use the promotion code once.

Please help because i want to do this as soon as  possible.

Re: Changing HDD in PS3 60gb Model.

How long does the backup take, and how long for it to be put on the new HDD?

Do you think 320gb is more than enough for games, films and PlayTV??

About 2 hours to backup and 1 hour to restore.

320gb is more than enough.

Re: Changing HDD in PS3 60gb Model.

i can use a USB stick to back up data on my ps3 right?

it says my free space is 37GB

Re: Changing HDD in PS3 60gb Model.

It depends how big the USB stick is and how much used memory is on the PS3 now

Re: Changing HDD in PS3 60gb Model.

When backing up the PS3 HDD, does it create an exact image of the data like keep all trophies and things installed like PS3 Home??

Need info asap as im going to do my upgrade in a bit.

Trophies are saved on PSN.  I would go to the trophy menu and press triangle to sync with server before you remove the hard drive.  Then when you restore the backup any trophies that are missing are at least recorded on PSN.

I found that when I'd installed the new hard drive and restored from the backup, some trophies were there once I synchronised, but others weren't.  For the missing ones I had to play that game so it created their trophy section, then I just synchronised again got them back.

Most importantly ensure which ever HDD you upgrade to has a SATA-1 interface - i.e a data transfer rate of 1.5GB/s -because otherwise the PS3 will not recognise your new hard drive. I personally recommend you use a 5400rpm Fujitsu or Seagate HDD with an 8mb cache.

Many 320GB drives do tend to be SATA-2 (have a transfer rate of 3GB/s) and the PS3 does not take to these - many have encountered problems before using SATA-2 drives (including myself hence I am now the wiser lol !!! )

I have the Fujitsu 250GB HDD which is ultra smooth and bags plenty of storage space.

Good Luck
