Hi guys i turned my ps3 on tonight after playing earlier that day and it comes up with a message

"The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored." i've done this twice now and it keeps popping up what can i do!

EDIT: i'm going to leave it for 24 hours then try again if all else fails i'll do what sensible answers are provided.

If you're lucky it'll fix itself in 3-4 goes. It's happened to me three times now, twice I've had to restore the factory settings which isn't very fun, as you lose all of your save games, downloads, music, movies etc.

Ensure that you clear the dust from your PS3 regularly, if it's making a loud fan noise when you use it, the HDD is in danger of overheating, which seems to cause the corrupted data .

Since I cleaned the dust out this hasn't happened to me anymore.

Alright i'll try that tonight.

if it fails i'll unscrew it to clean. will they still repair? i'm using the slim no unusual sounds

If you get it going again do a full backup, then next time do a full format and restore. If that fails get a new hard disk drive and restore to that instead.

The diagnostic menu is not a 'secret'.

Opening your console will void any remaining warranty.

Physically removing / upgrading the HDD is a feature of the PS3, and will not void your warranty (providing it's done correctly).

If your PS3 is advising that the "Hard Drive is corrupted and needs to be restored" it will generally mean that the console has lost power unexpectedly - due to blackouts or not being turned off correctly.

To get into safe mode / diagnostic mode:

Turn on or plug in your console.

From Standby (red light) - press and hold the power button untli the light goes through green and back to red.

Then, press and hold the power button until you hear a double beep.

You will be prompted to plug your controller and press the PS button, and then be prompted with 6 options.

Choosing "#3 Restore File System" will look similar to the system generated message you may have been getting - but will be more thorough.

Depending on the level of data corruption, if this resolves your issue, any data should be intact.

If this loops as well, then it would be best to then try "#5 Restore PS3 System" - which is the same as choosing "Quick Restore" through the XMB - it will delete any and all data on your console.
