Excessive fan noise

Since last summer my PS3 fan has started to make a really loud noise when on for more than 15 minutes. I thought at first this was normal, but my house mates PS3 makes no noise at all nomatter how long its left on for. Iv tried switching it from horizontal to vertical and giving it plenty of room to allow air to reach it but nothing has worked so far.

Any suggestions?

Re: Excessive fan noise

Hey

Mine has done that for a while already - I got me the intercooler but that didn't make a difference, the fam still whizzed away.

And today, I switched my PS one and it was one for like 5 minutes, it switched off mid-game and hasn't been able to start up since.

I don't know if the fan issue is the cause of this but I cant think of anything else that would make my PS do this.

As you can imagine, I am a bit depressed right now...

Re: Excessive fan noise

a good hoover around the vents may help (a bit)

The heat can be due to dust - or can be due to all sorts of other things too :smileysad:
but it isn't the best of signs :smileysad:

Re: Excessive fan noise

After searching around on the internet I found a method of cleaning where you hold the eject button as you turn it on, but a lot sites say that this can damage your PS3, anyone know anything about this?

Re: Excessive fan noise

That is the 'fan test'

It only work on some models (mainly the phat 40Gb version).

It doesn't so much clean anything (as such) - it 'just' runs the fans up to max speed for a short while - which may also blow some of the dust out.

Personally I've done it myself a couple of times, with no ill affects - but it is a bit like sitting in your car and shoving your foot on the throttle whilst in neutral.
Not something I would recommend doing very often... :smileysad:

I'm also not going to guarantee it will help or break the PS3 :smileysad: :smileyhappy:
(sorry!)
but it's a bit like asking if doing the full throttle thing will be ok in a car - 9 times out of 10, in a fairly new car, this will not be a problem at all.
But on the 10th time, it could go pop :smileysad:
